Decision to cut Hunter Smith highlights D.C. dysfunction | ProFootballTalk

Let’s think about this one for a second. Your punter is your holder, and your punter makes a mistake while serving as your holder, so you fire your punter?

Why not do something radical like, say, having someone else serve as holder?

This move seems like another case of Shanahan thinking that whatever makes him feel better coincides with the best interests of the team. And after a frustrating loss, Shanahan probably felt a little bit better after getting rid of the guy who failed to catch in the rain a snap that was high from a long snapper who wasn’t fired for making a high snap. (Yet.)

Talk about stupid. . . .

Wow. That is.......wow.

Look, Shanahan won a couple of rings in the 90's by a) having Elway, Davis, and a ton of talent, and b) cheating the cap. As a result, he was labeled a "genius," a moniker he readily believed, and he has coached the rest of his career accordingly.

Only problem is that he's a mediocre coach. None of this Redskins business surprises me.

Sorry, I don't buy this. The Donkeys had the Pats number for a long time under Shanny, and not just when Elway was there. You don't consistently beat BB without having some serious chops.

That being said, I'm as mystified as everyone else here by his personnel moves this year. Maybe the guy just needs a strong GM.

Hunter Smith was also 30th (out of 32) in punting average, 31st in net, 21st in punts inside the 20, and had a 14.8 return average against him. Perhaps he cut his punter because he was terrible at punting.

Yeah, but at this point in the season, are you going to get anyone better?

[Plus averages don't tell the whole story in punting the way they do on KOs.]

Who knows? And the averages don't tell the whole story, but it tends to balance out by December. I'm just offering that perhaps there's more to this than just a missed hold.

thanks for saving me a post.

Who knows why he took that job, or what he can do to change the atmosphere?

Maybe he's just trying to get fired, which ironically is a plus in the world of long term contracts, while a minus for normal people.

The perennially underachieving Chargers have owned the Colts under both Marty and Norv Turner. Norv Turner.

Sometimes teams just own another team, and it has nothing to do with quality of coaching.
