tl;dr: It's a leaguewide safety measure. All OL, DL, linebackers, and TEs are required to wear "Guardian Caps," designed to reduce the likelihood of concussions. Other players can choose to wear them.

 
Good idea... Why riskit the biscuit if you don't have to... Would rather those guys look a bit silly in camp than have anyone miss game time due to a concussion or other head type injury... (And I have no idea what an other type head injury would be, just spitballin' here)

Well, we've already been looking silly since 1993 anyway, so what's the diff

I like the giant helmets, makes it look like pee-wee football on fast forward.
 
Shouldn't RBs get the same protection as LBs. Both often lead with their head.
Guess it's the leagues way of keeping RB wages down
