No financial details are available just yet, but Grimes won't be hitting the market come March 11. It's a major score for new Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey, who retains a shutdown corner one year after Jeff Ireland traded Vontae Davis away. Grimes was PFF's No. 2 corner last season and Davis was No. 3. We're expecting a lot of the guaranteed money up front thanks to Grimes' age (he'll turn 31 in July), but it will be lucrative and contain plenty of cash. Last season, Grimes tied for 11th in interceptions with four, tied for sixth in pass breakups with 16 and allowed a mere 66.3 passer rating with zero touchdowns when thrown at. He was our No. 1 free agent corner.

It'll be curious to see the financial details and how it might affect Talib

Re: @MiamiDolphins: Dolphins re-signed CB Brent Grimes to a four-year contract

As already discussed on the "how much will it take to resign Talib" thread. Not sure that anything short of 4/$30M will be sufficient at this point. It remains to be seen exactly what the terms of Grimes' deal are.

The #Dolphins and Brent Grimes set the CB market, 4-years and 32 mil with 16 guaranteed. Aqib Talib's price tag just went up... #Patriots

should be interesting

Why does this mean Talib's price just went up? I don't know much about Grimes but I know he was ranked as the #2 Corner by ProFootball Focus last year...FWIW. And I imagine he is much more durable than Talib and has less baggage.

It is essentially a two year deal for $8 million per season. I do not think that Talib would receive a bigger contract than Grimes. Grimes despite missing most of 2012 is durable, he does not have any character concerns, and he has performed at an extremely high level every season since his second year as pro.

I don't think the Patriots will exceed $6.5 million APY and two guaranteed years. There are other options on the UFA market, they aren't going to pay a ransom for player who was on his way to being an in season street free agent before they took a chance on him.

Talib's contract should have durability incentives built in so if healthy Talib will earn as much as 7 mil per season.

If not, the deal isn't right and we should move on.

To me, I think about how Talib got schooled by Steve Smith all over the field. I realize he doesn't handle the small, quick receivers well and may have been banged up (Ice up Son!) but an elite corner needs to be able to cover all types of receivers.

As for shutting down Jimmy Graham, I'm not so sure Jimmy wasn't hobbled by his foot injury that game.

I like Talib, and there's no questioning how his absence affects this defense but I would "over pay" for him.

Interesting will be interesting to see the year by year breakdown

I'm thinking a $4 million base in 2014 and a $4 million base in 2015, both fully guaranteed, an $8 million signing bonus which is $2 million a season, and then an $8 million non guaranteed base for 2016 and 2017. This would make his cap hit $6 million for 2014, $6 million for 2015, $10 million for 2016, and $10 million for 2017. If this is the actual terms they could cut him in 2016 and only liable for the $4 million remaining from his signing bonus, which is $2 million per season.

Probably because NFL GM's don't pay much attention to PFF rankings. Prior to injury last year and, when fully healthy, Talib is by far and away the better CB of the two.

Adios Aquib..............

Pro Football Focus' rankings are completely worthless but if Grimes gets 8 a year then there is no way Talib is back in NE because they aren't giving him that much and his agent will likely want more than that.

To what/who?

The only other legit CB1 just resigned with the Dolphins. The other arguable one is close to a deal with the Colts. (Davis)

Sam Shields? DRC? Verner? please.

Thank god for that, PFF is probably the worst football site there is, and i only say probably because I haven't seen them all and there is probably another site based off of 5 guys in a basement just making sh.t up that is just as worthless. PFF reminds me of the internet porn site that Seth Rogen and his pals set up in Knocked Up, a worthless rip off of other sites.

In my opinion the biggest difference between Talib and Grimes is that Grimes would have been in play for 31 other teams, and I don't think every team would bid for the services of Talib.

Don't get it twisted Talib balled with the best of them last season, early in the season he could have in the conversation for DPOY. That is great but teams will remember that he is 18 months removed from his last suspension and being dumped in season by the Bucs for a mid round draft pick. 4 interceptions and 13 pass defends is not going to erase that memory. I think the misconception is that Talib broke out in 2013, that is not true at all, Talib played lights out in 2009 and 2010, and teams still did not want him.

It as if posters forget that Talib was a UFA this past offseason and all he saw was a 1 year/$5 million contract. Grimes was also a UFA and received the same deal, the difference is Grimes was returning from a major knee injury, and Grimes proved himself, he went out and played in all 16 games at a pro bowl level. Talib did not, he missed 3 games with the same hip injury that has plagued him throughout his career, he had to be pulled out of a game in Carolina because he let Smith get under his skin and was unable to control his emotions. I really don't see anything different between 2013s UFA period and 2014s for Talib other than him being a year older.

Oh and sadly the days of teams thinking that being part of the Patriots cures character issues are over, so just because nothing is being said about Talib does not mean teams will believe he is a changed man. Hernandez ruined that possibility.

Sam Shields? DRC? Verner? please.

Verner is a very good and very underrated corner. He's knocking on the door to elite status and doesn't get as much love from writers and NFL fans alike because of where he plays. Seriously, check out some film on him. I would love to have Verner on the squad if Talib leaves and he comes cheaper.

As an aside, you were right about Richardson. I was so very wrong. But I was right about Eddie Lacy in his rookie season. :D

Thank god for that, PFF is probably the worst football site there is, and i only say probably because I haven't seen them all and there is probably another site based off of 5 guys in a basement just making sh.t up that is just as worthless. Some of their data is useful but their rankings are pretty much useless.

Makes it tough to sign Talib at the numbers people have been throwing around.

4/32 with 16m guaranteed. Yup that's a market setting deal. The question is where does Talib slot in? I'm thinking 7/28 with 14m guaranteed would be the minimum he'd want now. I'm certainly not willing to go over that 8m per mark.

Yep, i don't see them going over 7 per year.

if we lose talib..who do we get instead for our #1?

Or do you go after Byrd and Ward to off set his loss
