I too was initially skeptical about this "excuse" that the Patriots used to explain away the deflate comments by McNally and JJ. I'm a pretty "stout" guy myself and I don't necessarily use those terms to refer to myself or attempts to lose weight. In fact, if you called me fat outright or told me to go on a diet, you'd prolly have an asswhooping coming, so I'm perfectly acquainted with "euphemisms" for describing us bigger body-type folks. Even in football, O and D line man are often referred to ass big bodies, heavy loads, or any number of other "fat" euphemisms. Even so...... Deflate was a new one to me. I doubt many people round the locker room refered to Vince as Fat-Vinny..... No. it was always "Big Vince".
So instead of just mocking it as BS or whatever like many of the national folks.... I turned to google. I googled "deflate" and "Weight loss"
I found 278,000 results. Many of the early ones referenced the Patriots situations, so I jumped to PAGE 8.
I found quite a large number of "deflate" references as it pertains to weight loss. So many, that it got me thinking that perhaps it's not as far-fetched as it seems. I even found an old NEWSPAPER AD from 1982 that uses the exact term "deflate".
This was a 5-second search of google too. It's not like I had to work very hard to find any of this. However, and I guess this is my point, perhaps instead of just assuming that this is a BS excuse to pile on. When you hear people saying that it is total crap that two (obvious) jokesters, heavily involved in the preparations (e.g. inflating and deflating footballs) would use the term deflation as a fat euphemisms, perhaps suggest that they use google as a tool to enlighten them.
Not saying that this is the explicit reason that the reason these guys were using it, but it's CLEARLY not that unusual as most of us think at first blush.
