I have often pointed this out during game threads and have been scoffed at, but now glad to know there is actual evidence to back my assertions up.

This fall Edelman will be using the Umpire (the Referee is always behind the Offense). Just watch.

Who scoffed? I've chuckled at it a few times.

I practice running people into picks at WalMart and Supermarkets, It's great. Just assume people will always try to get in your way and you can just about make them walk into a pole, it's fun.

    Yawn.

Bill Walsh's offense has always used the position of the umpire to its advanatge since he designed it - over 30 years ago.

Nothing new to see. All goes back to Sid Gillman's throw it deep & hit the slant offense.

Dungy even discussed it during our Sunday night game this year. I wish they would give db's 10yds instead of 5. Could play more physical against those pic plays.

I've often thought that the NFL should make its officials full time employees of the League.

I guess the problem (aside from "one game a week") is that the pre-playoff, officiating season only lasts five months (August to December). So basically, they'd have to pay 16 crews of seven officials (R, U, HL, LJ, FJ, SJ, BJ) a full year's salary for 16 days of work plus, for some, playoffs if they want to be sure they can get the full attention of these guys during the season, (assuming they all won't have employers in a tough economy who would give them a five month leave of absence every year).

Maybe the answer is to have the Referees and Umpires be on the League Payroll full time so there is a full time core?

Make them (or some of them) the full time competition committee. That way they can review all the rules instead of Pollian trying to change everything while the other coaches and GMs are away. They set the agenda and take suggestions from all the coaches, owners, GMs instead of some.

I'm still waiting for the competition committee to bring up rule changes for on-side kicks this year
