Don't know if it's been said already but...

I wonder if that was a result of the "freelancing" and might have been the final straw that made the team show him the door?

I believe that mixup was related to the defensive line. We had three DEs.

Or the coaches I guess. But still... if Collins had anything to do with that then I bet that would have given him that final nudge off the team in BB's eyes.

According to Loyko he was involved in the 12 men thingy, got recently into a very heated argument with Patricia and got a pretty loud lesson from BB during/after the Bills game.

I think the answer is a lot simpler than this. It's just that his value was less than his asking price. We couldn't keep him so we traded him and got back what value we could get back. His value was what the market would bear. And we got good value from him considering it's only for 8 more games.

Just to add one more detail:

I honestly the bigger news in the entire trade that somehow goes unnoticed by many is that it looks to me like the Patriots setting themselves up for some FA action this offseason.

The reason I say this is because if the pick doesn't turn out to be a 3rd rounder this time then it turns into a 2018 fourth round pick. By this logic they could have just squatted on Collins and let him leave in February but the deal with the Browns now guarantees them something in return. To me this is a subtle show of hands...

You'd have to reason that they liked the FA strategy they took this past year. I can't imagine they wouldn't want to repeat this after the great success stories they have had this far.

My main reason for thinking that they might plan to get more active in FA is mostly the amount of cap space. When we still had Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins on the team those 60-65million didnt look like that much but if you don't have to pay those two their market contracts everything opens up a bit.

more $$ for Hightower, Butler, Bennett to get extensions

Add Sheard and potentially Harmon to the list. Although with Sheard I'm not sure he'll be as expensive as I thought he was going to be. We'll see

I've been relatively disappointed in Sheard so far this season. I was expecting more impact plays, but he hasn't flashed that much. Hard to judge too harshly without knowing injuries, assignments, etc, but if his second half winds up like his first half, I'm not sure he's a priority this offseason.

Exactly. I'm not expert enough to say hes been sucking or playing well.

Hes another play that IMO seems a little hot and cold.

Which is odd because I felt like he was pretty consistent (when healthy at least) last year. I'm wondering if the defense as a whole just hasn't quite gelled yet. And maybe Collins wasn't THE reason, but if he was a detriment to the X's and O's chemistry, hopefully they can regroup over the bye week and get going. The defense has been decent so far, but there's room to grow for sure.

Patricia and BB could be rope-a-doping the entire regular season for all I know.

The D has room for improvement no question.

Of the big five as of the end of last season:
Jones
Sheard
Collins
Hightower
Butler

Jones and Collins always seemed like the least likely to get paid by a he Pats. Only surprise is when they were let go.
