Since 4PM today is the deadline to reach a long-term deal with a franchise-tagged player like Stephen Gostkowski thought it would be a good idea to compile my tweets on the subject.

Stephen Gostkowski's
tag number equals $4.59m
$4.44m (120% of 2014 $3.7m cap no)
+ 100K offseason workout bonus
+ 50K Pro Bowl bonus
Source-CBA, Article 10, Section 11

The $4.459 cap number is the second-highest ever for a kicker.

He signed the tender in March guaranteeing his salary. It is very likely that Gostkowski did enough to already earn the $100,000 offseason workout bonus.

If he plays 2015 season tagged, if tagged again Ghost's 2016 cap number may be $5.478m 5.328m salary (120%of $4.44m salary) + 100K offseason+50K Pro Bowl. Lower the 2016 number by $50,000 if Gostkowski does not repeat as a Pro Bowl starter.

Only in Adam's last year with the Patriots (2005) has a kicker taken up a higher percentage of the Patriots salary cap than Gostkowski is taking up now.

As of today 10 kickers will become UFAs after 2015. Gostkowski, Adam, Josh Scobee, Mason Crosby, Phil Dawson, Kai Forbath, Josh Brown, Justin Tucker, Blair Walsh and Zuerlein.

Any extension will lower his 2015 cap number.

The below shows the cap hits for Janikowski, the currently highest paid kicker by APY (Average Per Year) and proposes a long-term deal for Gostkowski.

Heard you on the radio the other morning, the hosts were gushing(Tanguay/Reiss) you came across as very intelligent and knowledgeable..

Gostowski should be extended... I like when we do not have to discuss or worry about the kicking game..

We've been rather spoiled, going from Viniatieri for 10+ years to now Gost for 10+ years. Having a consistently reliable kicker is easy to take for granted until you see a team that doesn't have one.

Didn't Gost come from U Memphis? I ask as during the 10,000 collegiate Bowl games this past Dec. U Memphis played and their kicker (whom I think is a Soph) was touted as the best in the country.

Hope they do something long term. Without it, this will be very reminiscent of Adam Vinatieri. In 2002, they tagged him and worked out a 3 year deal. In 2005 they tagged him again, but he ended up playing out the year and then left for the Colts.

I guess they could tag him a second time, but they also have Nate Solder coming off his 5th year option next season.

It's hard to transition to a new kicker because you can't really groom one by giving them any meaningful experience unless you expend an active roster spot on him (LOL at the thought of BB ever doing this). All they can get are preseason kicks and maybe a role on the practice squad, but if you spend a draft choice for a good kicking prospect, they'll probably get plucked off your squad anyway. It's one of those moves where you just have to yank on the ripcord and hope the chute opens. I'd hate to do that with a SB caliber team even though it worked out in 2006, so I'm OK with the significant cap hit that a top kicker demands.
