Well the rule says he has to regain control prior to the ball hitting the ground which he didn't since he lost control after the ball hit the ground, LAWYERED!
The only thing clear and obvious is the NFL decided the outcome based on what they wanted opposed to the rule and what actually happened.

Only automatic review on turnovers and scoring plays, so if they called those both correct even if it was incorrect the worse case is a review, but if you call it incorrectly the Pats are robbed of 4 points, a challenge, and a bunch of time.
