Glazer: Ravens fire Billick

Saved me a post. I wonder if he might take a year off and broadcast? He'd be great at it, I'm guessing.

That's a real high stress job and a lot of coaches who've stayed around have done this. Vermeil and Parcells come to mind.

Parcells would have been dead if not for the enforced time off.

Bisciotti owes him $15M so he's not taking a coordinators job. Not sure he's employable as a HC this season although there are a lot of idiot owners and GM's out there. He would likely want to let the dust settle (he lost a straw poll in his locker room) and hope to come back as a full control guy next year - maybe the colsolation prize in the Cowher Sweepstakes. What better way to soothe the ego and feather your cap than joining the media - he could take the slot Tuna vacated at ESPN where the would all deferentially call him "coach".

If he's respected by Parcells he will be wearing Dolphin teal next year as the defensive co-ordinator.

The guy won a superbowl and had multiple playoff appearances.

I thought he & Ozzie Newsome were a pretty good team and acquired some really good players oddly enough on defense, not offense.

I think ownership (Bisciotti) may have abandoned him when he needed support to clean house - not sure though there, just a guess.

Ray Lewis should have been muzzled years ago and I think when it became his team and not Billicks - it was game over for the coach.

I do recall him coming out in support of BB and who could ever forget his man love with Rodney.

He'll land somewhere and I wish him the best, really not a bad football guy at all IMHO.

Stupid move by the Ravens. He's a Super Bowl winning coach, one year removed from 13-3. They're letting inmates run the asylum over there.

Bingo. The fact that Ray Ray was able to go on the radio and basically talk a load a **** about his current Super Bowl winning coach with ZERO repercussions is all you need to know about how that team is run.

Still, I'm not sure that 75% of that team's success shouldn't be attributed to Newsome anyway.

Agree with others that he'll likely collect a fat paycheck sitting in a studio in Bristol and wait for the perfect opportunity to take another HC gig.

I mean, look at the HCs out there. Lane Kiffin? Mike Nolan? Hell, Norv and Wade, perennial retreads, were given chances with 3rd teams. Billick will be back and will command a handsome salary.

Not often a SB winning coach hits the market...

I agree. He'll go somewhere, rediscover his offensive guru reputation, and will come back as a better head coach next time.

Here are the Ravens records in the Billick era:

1999: 8-8
2000: 12-4
2001: 10-6
2002: 7-9
2003: 10-6
2004: 9-7
2005: 6-10
2006: 13-3
2007: 5-11

Now, you can keep claiming that he is somehow being wrongly fired, but that's just not the case. 80-64 (.556) over 9 seasons at the same place isn't horrible, but it's nothing to write home about and, given the defense that's been in place, the inability of a purported "offensive genius" to put together an offense after 9 seasons, and only winning 1 playoff game since 2000 is a failing validating his termination.

Maybe he should ask Randy Moss where he misplaced it... He was Denny Green's OC on that 1998 Vikings points scored record we just smashed with the same damn WR who was his ROY that year...Yeesh, and you guys scoff at Josh getting tapped on a thin resume... BTW he lucked into a well constructed expansion teams defense in 1999 that essentially led to his coaching a superbowl champion in 2000. Then he killed the only thing it really needed to continue to compete - a merely functional offense. Who worries about QB's when you have a QB guru on staff...

This is a fun read, especially the stuff about his appearances on the Match Game, Jeopardy and The Gong Show... prior to starting his college "coaching" career as a PR director. His resume before Baltimore was as a college and pro protoge of the immortal "They are who we thought they are...".

Good reminder too about how inconsistent the Ravens have been on his watch.

Billick sucks as a coach. I'd rather have Pete Carroll back.

Look at the Pats-Ravens game this year. Talk about an out-of-control team! No direction, no focus.

Parcells is too smart to hire him, but maybe maybe somehow the Bills will fire Jauron or something. I'd like to have Billick in the division to play twice a year.

I guees that he was kissing his ass goodbye when we played them LOL not Rodney's

I don't know what Parcells thinks of him but chances are he ends up in Miami next year as the Dolphins head coach.

Steve Bisciotti is doing a very good job explaining the Owner's decision (he is on live now). He has had full control of the team, and has only seen one winning season in the last four. Brian WAS the problem. The locker room was out of control, "he got disproportionate amount of blame" and that the "owners deserve as much of the blame" as Billick.

Bottom line - no chemistry - no results - and the team owes it to the fans to "find a future hall of fame coach". And NO - you can't have BB!!

WHAT!!!! No kiss goodbye or anything.

Rodney, this must break your heart.

"I don't know what Parcells thinks of him..." you should have quit while you were ahead. There isn't enough room in South Florida for 2 egos of such substantial size. Parcell's will hire a Parcells guy, past or present. Billick developed at the feed of the immortal Denny Green, who can't even get himself a job any more.

Hey, maybe that was it! Maybe Rodney said I'm gonna get your ass fired...

Hard to say why but I always liked Billick. He has a certain charisma.

Yeah, your probably right. Good call.

I think Billick problem is one that many coaches have.
He does not have control and in some cases, respect of his players.
That's Ray Lewis's team.
I feel bad for the next poor sob who walks through that door.

The next coach will be somebody who is judged able to exercise dominance over or despite Ray Lewis.

Unless they bring Marvin Lewis back. I'd love that. Brilliant black guys have little problem getting hired any more, but it's a good sign for the state of this country when an incompetent like Herm Edwards or Isiah Thomas gets a big job. Those are the truly race-blind hires.

(Yeah, I mean that. The idea is adapted from an old Gloria Steinem quote, and she was right.)

Uh, he did win a superbowl, but he hasn't won a playoff game since 2002......living in the past

IMO, Billick goes to Atlanta. They need someone who thinks he knows what he's doing as Blank obviously does not.
