When you're trying not to expose your source when it's a limited group, and you're trying to find a clean way to say "They think Goodell needs to eat a whole bag of ****s", you sometimes get a little jumbled up.
Yeah, but he had some time before going on the air to figure it out. Zo's just an excitable guy.

But they didn't do that. They turned them into the 8th pick of the fifth round, first. Of course they had more picks than they wanted, but they also had a tremendous restriction on the fourth rounder next year, that made it more like a 4th-5th rounder, unless people expect both the Seahawks and pats to fold.

I'm not opposed to it, but spending that much effort to get a pick which is restricted makes little sense unless there's no way to get picks in unrestricted rounds next year.
Effort? They explore trading up and trading down throughout the entire draft. Most of those conversations bear no fruit. When you look at the end result and compare it to their goals, it is a good haul for just a few phone calls.

Lost a year to gain probably 9-10 spots. No way you can spin that as value.
How is it "losing a year"? Keeping in mind that the Patriots are a team always looking at the big picture and looking long term, you get the guy 1 year later on the front end, but you keep him 1 year later on the back end.

Doug Kyed just reminded me that Travis Feeney is still available. Undersized but very athletic linebacker. Eric Striker too I believe.

Wouldn't hate a Striker-HT-Collins Holy Trinity.

So, the fifth round wasn't the fifth round this year, but the bottom of the fourth round next year, plus a few spots in the seventh round?

No, it was a 5th this year. You've been saying that they pushed back a year to only gain ~9 spots in the draft order. I'm saying it'll be closer to 20 because the 8th pick in the 5th round versus the 28-32 pick in the 4th round actually has about 20 picks between them.

Yeah, but he had some time before going on the air to figure it out. Zo's just an excitable guy.

Absolutely. Zolak is a Ritalin poster child.

The Patriots have 4 of the next 18 picks.

One more time. He traded 2 6th round picks and a 7th, total worth 25 points, for a mid fifth worth 32.6, then got an offer for a late 4th worth 44 points. Turning 25 points on the value chart into 44 points on the value chart is great value going by the chart. I wanted him to keep it and take a RB and made that clear at the time. That doesn't however change the fact that he managed to get their fourth back next year starting with 2 6ths and a 7th, and that is smart maneuvering. Belichick always picks at the end of every round and has had to find ways to work the system to make up for that, this is how he does it, and whether I like it or not it works.

I think you have a late fourth next year being worth more than an early fifth this year. Is that right?

I can think of only three cases in which a truly great QB has been dumped for a younger guy.
  • Joe Montana was dumped for Steve Young after Young had already been league MVP.
  • Brett Favre was dumped for Aaron Rodgers after Rodgers had backed him up for a while. Besides, it was Favre.
  • Peyton Manning was dumped for the prospect Andrew Luck, after Manning had already had an injury that indeed did permanently diminish his skills.
I don't think Brady/JAG is likely to rise to the level of any of those three comparisons. If Brady sits for any reason, and JAG plays at his level, we can reopen the discussion. But I'm not holding my breath for that.

Patriots select Eastern Illinois Kamu Grugier-Hill 208th overall.
