DE Chris Long signs one-year contract with Patriots

Something like:

70% Sheard
70% Ninkovich
30% Long
30% Flowers

could be a heck of a edge rush group. Welcome to the team Chris. Based off his twitter account he's hungry to prove people wrong. Hopefully we get Andre Carter 2.0!

The most important thing in my mind is simply avoiding the insanity of having any DE play 90%+ of the snaps, especially Ninko.

One year deal huh? Probably a prove it deal. I would imagine he got here and BB told him he was about to ship out Jones and there was a prime opportunity there for the taking for him... Only issue is, if he does excel, he will be long gone next year.

FWIW, he's already on the wrong side of 30.

Yeah I do realize that. My hope is that he is just a real productive contributor and the team extends him. That's probably part of the thinking too - if he really sucks after all, the team doesn't wanna be stuck with him. But, it's funny what a difference going from perennially 7-9 St. Louis to the New England Dynasty will do for a guy.

So what, hopefully he leaves with a shiny new ring.

We replace Jones with C. Long. Looks like Arizona is trying to replace Cooper with E. Mathis. Interesting stuff to see how this all shakes down.

Trio of Sheard/Nink/Long isnt alot worse than Jones/Sheard/Nink. If Long does have a good year and leaves Pats likely get a compensation pick so would only make it better.

Yeah, I guess it's not much a difference anyway considering Jones was on the last year of his deal too.

I don't see it as a prove it deal I see it as a get me a ring deal.

Kinda like Revis he got his money willing to forgo some of it for one year to come here for his shot at a ring. Granted long and revis will be in vastly different salary levels they each probably could get more than we gave.

Lets see if he lasts till the season starts.

woot woot! Great day of moves!

Go Hoos

Long is still a good player when healthy. He will get a chance to rush from the right side more here than he did with the Rams, where he was strong side mostly.

So to recap...the Pats trade CJ and save 5 million, use that (or part of it) to sign Chris Long.

Lose a late 3rd comp pick, likely, and get a second 2 years earlier in exchange.

AND get a reclamation project with huge upside who thus far has been not good, but in a position of great need.

Unless you feel like long will be a huge drop-off from CJ, this is a pretty good day.

(Oh, and I still think Trey Flowers is going ot be pretty damned good, and Rufus Johnson will be a capable backup.)
