Patriots 'part ways' with OL coach Dave DeGuglielmo

I understand that there can be a change in philosophies that would clash with current personnel, but when guys are simply whiffing on blocks and missing assignments, there has to be a gap in communication. I'm obviously not an expert at football, much less blocking assignments on the oline, but I do have a basic understanding of the different positions on the line and their responsibilities....

Is it possible that the Olinemen were simply getting confused about how their assignments change after Brady identifies the Mike? Could it be as simple as Gugs not being able to communicate WHO each lineman is supposed to block?.... like he implemented common core math on the big guys?

Having JORDAN DEVEY start his first year remember that? What a c-----ter f--- that was. That was enough for me. Then having an never-ending parade of guys in different positions.

I never thought I'd miss Scar more than I did that game in Denver.

Remember hearing that guys weren't high on this fired coach?
Perhaps the Jordan Devey debacle , Goog lost all personell decision making responsibilities

Scar made it easy. This fired guy made it hard. Different approaches. One is the winner.

Why the heck did you censor "cluster"?

There's the old saying that, "those who can, do; those who can't, teach." It's not really fair to the teaching profession, because the corollary is often true - the best at doing stuff is often the worst at teaching it.

I had a brilliant math statistics professor in college; really knew her stuff, was enthusiastic, very intelligent and well-respected. She was the worst teacher I had. She just couldn't explain things to mere math mortals like me. Whereas I learned the most from the most down-to-earth, least professionally accomplished of all those professors. He knew how to explain things.

Ted Williams quit as a baseball manager because he couldn't grasp how people couldn't do what he told them. Meanwhile Earl Weaver could barely play minor league ball, but he was extremely successful in getting supremely talented people to do their best.

In short, it's quite possible - Googs may really know his stuff, but stink at teaching it to pros.

I've always believed Brady covers for a mediocre line. He sets the protection pre snap and gets the ball out quick. When we went from Brady in 07 to Cassel in 08 our sacks jumped dramatically with the same line.

Sunday was just a cluster f though. Obviously a line with Cannon, Fleming and Kline is not even mediocre, it's just plain bad, and it was bad most of the year. We need to add talent and depth at Tackle and Guard. We can't go into next year not being able to run the ball and getting Brady smoked every game.

I'm on my roof ready to shout. Are you guys ready?
DeGuglielmo suc-ed!

This message was approved by BB.

Okay, well damn it felt like more. I doubt it was the one game too, Koppen said BB doesn't make rash decisions. Miami game was probably a huge factor too.
I think it was the guy not the results. BB would not fire the OL coach over how the OL played this year alone. I think he just didn't fit in and is not a BB kind of guy.

bye felicia.

We have not had a good running game in what 3 years? 4? 10?

until we get a coach in here that can teach the link to open running lanes Brady will keep having to carry the team.

That's been my stance since the start. Things I've heard was it never was the right relationship , I imagine even if the Patriots had won and gone on to the SB he'd still be gone after this year.

Dante liked uber-athletic (for an O-linemen) 300 pound guys. Since he left we've drafted, I think it's, 5 much bigger guys with average at best athleticism. Googs was coaching players thought to fit his system. Sure Vollmer & Solder were Dante's guys, but the interior O-line was all Googs' guys and Vollmer and Solder missed significant time.

Additionally, Googs was the O-line coach who put the prospects through their paces at the 2014 & 2015 combine. I don't believe for a second that Googs "had no input on" the OL we drafted, as some have suggested.

Scar had much more say over the players than Googs did. That's been stated by numerous guys (Price, Howe, Curran, etc). Scar is the one who put the players through their paces at the combine. This was reported extensively.

What you choose to believe and what is fact clearly are two different things.

A left olines only job it to protect the QBs blind side by blocking the other guy. I know Solder was out all year but if they are using cannon, who is not an everyday player because of injury, as a main cog how is that Deguglielmos fault he can't block? No coach is getting more out of cannon.

You have clearly shown you do not understand all the concepts that are needed to even begin talking about the O-line, the smarts that are required to play on the O-line, and all the scheming /techniques used by O-linemen. Until you have anything more than a basic "his only job is.... " you can't be part of the conversation.

BTW, for the record, it is the offensive tackle who is opposite the throwing arm of the quarterback whose job it is to protect the blind side. For right-handed quarterbacks, yes, that is the LT. But for left-handed quarterbacks, that job falls to the Right Tackle.

Cannon can and has blocked well against certain teams. One of those teams is Miami and yes, it was against Cameron Wake, in previous years. And a player can regress if he's being taught techniques and concepts that run contrary to what he's been taught previously.

I said it in the draft forum but I wouldn't expect a guard to be drafted this year. Instead I assume they will bring in 1-2 decent, average veteran guards (think Wendell, Connolly level) for TC as fallback in case Jackson and Mason don't develop fast enough.

EDIT:

Forgot to say.. you can expect 1-2 OT to be taken pretty early in the draft this year. Vollmer is getting to a certain age where his next injury might be cause for retirement and Solder's contract doesn't extend very far. Sounds like the time to groom a new tackle.

Once you get outside the 1st round, getting an OT is hit or miss. And with the Patriots not having a 1st round pick, the chances of getting someone like Vollmer late in the 2nd round again is probably slim.

Yes.. All of those sacks are because of the O-line being mediocre.. None of them were because they had a 1st year starter behind them who held onto the ball too long and tried to make things happen instead of throwing the ball away..

Exactly , well said.
