Edelman > Welker

People on this board either have short memories or chose to remember the worst

That, and the apparent need to dump on prior players in order to compliment a present player.

Edelman's contributions are huge for the Pats without reference to Welker (who has scrambled eggs for brains due in part to taking many more hits in the middle of the field than Edelman over 6 years while catching passes for Brady and helping the Pats win). Welker's contributions over a six year stretch were also awesome (somehow an average year of 112 receptions and 1200 yards makes him worthy of scorn).

Personally, I am a big fan of Jules for his personality, background and a fighting spirit very much like Brady. I wonder if we would be seeing this discussion if the Pats lost yesterday as a result of Jules's drop that could have been a pick 6 but for a lucky drop by KC (despite a heroic return after injury).

These comparisons always seem to hinge on Pats wins or losses, and the apparent need to drop the weight of a game on a single play or player (Jules did not win the title alone, nor Brady nor Butler (and failings by one of those individual players would not diminish the individual performances of the others if the team lost)). Welker did not lose the title in 2012 himself either (I count a few other offensive and defensive snaps before that that could have won that game). It is the ultimate team sport, with schemes and roles changing drastically every year.

It just drives me nuts that Jules has a big game and the "better than WW" movement is re-energized.

I'll add something not talked about: Edelman plays big in big games. Welker not so much.

Yeah I think Edelman is clearly better but, we don't need to bash Wes. He was a warrior and an all time great Patriot. He is probably SB 42 MVP if Samuel makes the pick or Carey calls holding. Hope both end up in the red blazer.

You have to consider Wes lost basically 3 years of his prime (2008, 2009, & wobbled 2010) of playoffs. He was awesome in 2007-08.

Welker has 88 post season catches and 3- 100 yard games including 103 in SB 42.

Welker was awesome, tough and did a ton for this franchise. But as of today Edleman is awesomer! He can do many things Welker couldn't.

Welker was great. No question. But if I could start one of the two in a big game it would be an easy decision.

If Welker makes the catch in Super Bowl 46 we would be talking about Brady getting his 6th ring

I love JE11, and we sure can't call him WWMM anymore. He's an elite player, and the O is so much better when he is playing. Plus he's a Super Bowl hero.

But, he's had two great years and two good but injury-shortened years.

Welker had FIVE great years, and one really good but injury-shortened year.

JE has a ways to go to approach the greatness of WWW.

hard to compare a pure slot receiver (WW) to someone who plays everywhere, with a minority of his plays in the slot

That sums it up and I agree with DI that this is stupidity. The current guy is always better than the old guy. Just the way it is.

Also anyone who puts JE over Troy Brown is clueless.

Can we all agree that Randy was the best?

Welker was great. I've always resented the mini-backlash against him due to his departure. He's a legit HOF candidate due to the crazy-good stats he put up within his 5 year period in NE.

But, with that being said, his game was somewhat one-dimensional. Tough to stop, sure. But you could never ask Welker to run that 20 yard route over the middle, like Edelman did, against Seattle in the Superbowl. He just didn't have that skill set. Edelman is, like, 95% as good as Welker when it comes to the dink-n-dunk stuff. But Edelman has aspects to his game that Welker just never had. I'll take Edelman.

Welker was fantastic but Edelman is a leader and has fire that makes everyone around him better. Even when Tom gets down on the game, Edelman can bring him back and vise versa. That's huge.

This has literally been talked about in roughly 90% of posts in this thread.
