That would be nice, yet most of them haven't had the privilege of an upbringing that developed that in them. So they haven't. We can be frustrated about it all we want, but demanding that they be that mature is like demanding a paraplegic to get up out of the wheelchair and walk up the steps. The capability just isn't there at that time.
I acknowledge your point but I don't agree with it. If they have any level of intelligence and maturity whatsoever, then they should know, coming from the gutter, whatever opportunity presented to them is a gift and they should grab it, and run with it as fast as they can. Perhaps that's an overly simplistic view and I acknowledge there are a great many factors in play, I'm just sick of making excuses for people because I never did for myself.

I've always held myself accountable, for better or worse. And believe me, I know I've made many boneheaded decisions. Learning from them is the key.

Yeah, there's no single right answer to any of this - that's the only thing I distrust (absolutist answers that shut down conversation.)

Congrats on what you've accomplished. I hope you can use some of your time and energy to teach what you've learned to others who need to learn it.

No, the dumb MFers are not. Good thing that they have people like you to feel sorry for them.

What percentage of the NFL actually finished and got their college degree? • /r/nfl

Luck has a degree in Architectural design. Which is pretty impressive because Stanford.

Kaepernick has a bachelors in Business management.

Russell Wilson has a bachelors in communications and a masters in educational leadership and policy analysis.

Drew Brees has a bachelors in Industrial Management.

Phillip Rivers has a degree in Business.

Patrick Willis has a degree in Criminal Justice and plans on being a cop in the bay area when he retires.

Navarro Bowman has a degree in Crime,Law,and Justice.

Richard Sherman has a degree in Communications(Stanford) and has begun working towards his Masters degree.

Eli Manning has a degree in Marketing.

Nick Foles has a degree in Communications.

RG3 has a degree in Political Science and is working on a Masters in Communications.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has a degree in Economics (Harvard) and a 1580 (out of 1600) SAT score.

Ben Roethlisberger has a degree in Education.

Troy Polamula has a degree in History.

Jimmy Graham has a degree in Business and a double major in Marketing and Management.

Vernon Davis has an Art Degree.

Alex Smith has a degree in Economics (earned in 2 years) and began working on his Masters before being drafted.

Mike Glennon has a Bachelors in Business Management and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies.

Jay Cutler has a Bachelors in human and organizational development.
Useful, but I'll add that we shouldn't pump arts degrees like Sherman's too much.

There are in fact many people on the NCAA's payroll. It is not an all-volunteer organization.
They don't pay any athletes. Are you being pedantic or did you really not understand?

Why? I know lots of people with Art degrees that are successful and happy.

Not that I disagree with the sentiment that during your teenage years, you need guidance and probably don't know a heap about the world but, at what age do you consider being "old enough" to make important life decisions? We can't continue to baby the next generation because soon enough, they'll be in their thirties and still not have a clue.

At some point, you simply have to take responsibility for your own life.
This generation is in their 30's pretty much without a clue. I think, IIRC, this generation has the highest percentage of 30+ year olds still admitting to living with their parents... lmao.

I'm never particularly bothered by the degree, it's always the point of getting yourself an education and opening up yourself to thinking critically and freely. That's the win (IMO).

One thing is for sure Kontra, we're living in an interesting socioeconomic time.

Neither. They chose to pay administrators, accountants, marketers, secretaries and so on. They chose not to pay collegiate athletes or allow college athletes to get paid, but allow coaches to get paid. That is not a pedantic point. That is the larger truth behind my correction to your statement that the NCAA doesn't pay anybody.

I would suggest this is because the NCAA has monopoly control on college athletes whereas they do not on professional administrators, accountants, marketers, secretaries, football coaches and so on.

Get out of here with this "lazy" entitled millennial crap. If you want to spew this stuff I'm sure there's some dumb thread in the political subforum for you.

I know a crap load of millennials who can't get jobs in their degree fields because the older generation 55-65 aren't retiring because they did a terrible job at saving money for retirement. They aren't lazy most are doing two low paying jobs because of this situation.

Are there 18 yr olds who come out of high school and expect everything handed to them, sure but every generation has them including the World War 2 generation.

But a lot have stories like mine,
I was lucky, graduated High School in 1996 I didn't go to college right away because my parents and myself couldn't afford to send me to college. So I worked right after high school and worked my way up in the company I worked at for 15 years. After the company I worked for sold, I decided to go to Night School In 2011 and got a job working for Hotel Banquet Department while attending school. 5 years later I will be graduating this summer with a degree in Hotel Management.

Ehh.... The moment I see

So on Monday, they’ll be working for free.

I know the piece isn't worth reading, because it's already starting with the lies/mischaracterizations. Scholarship athletes are paid with..... scholarships (and the accompanying extras)!

Coaches get paid but the guys putting buts in the seats and actually winning the game don't lol. It's a joke

Boston College costs more than $48k per year, just for tuition. Scolarship players get that for nothing (I'm talking cash, not saying that performing as a scholarship athlete is nothing), along with room, board and supplies.

Tell me again how they aren't getting paid.

He is right. Sports and scholarships are almost like indentured servitude. Get injured and need hospital rehab, guess who pays? Not the College, get hurt, lose your scholarship. Team meeting from 5-11AM class then afternoon practice. Tom Coughlin was one of the worst as far as far as giving players time to be students. Worked out great for Tom and the college made $.

Football is on the way down in the US.

None of this s true. They are fully covered insurance wise and scholarships are now 4 year deals.

Even regular non scholarship students have to have insurance from parents or get it from college. You can't even enroll for classes with out insurance. I know I go through the process every August and January. Have to prove I have outside health insurance at Northeastern.

These sports are a huge money suck on universities. I'm in favor of a professional system where the athletes aren't actually students. I don't even care if they affiliate with the universities. If they want to, fine. But what I'm most against is average students shelling out $1k a year in fees to support bigtime sports. No one talks about all the subsidies for athletics, no one talks about the sports facilities which are not paid with money from the athletic department.

Also, watch the NBDL (the NBA's minor league). The quality of basketball play is light years ahead of the college game. Do you see many butts in the seats?

I suspect a true marketplace for athletes aged 18-22 is more like minor league baseball than it is the spectacle of college sports. The reason people seem to care about the lower skill level at play on college fields is because of the actual schools, not the athletes themselves.

Don Yee is totally wrong here.

In the case of the athletes, they are fully covered by the athletic department, unlike regular students.

I understand but my point is you can't even enroll in school without insurance.
