"Independent Medical Consultant" game time power scares me.

is there any way brady can refuse to be taken out of the game in that situation and pay a fine later on? it's the super bowl....

Can you blame us for not trusting the league office and its selection of "independent" auditors of the Patriots?

Absolutly not! However I haven't heard 1 complaint from a team or a player about this. Something tells me if something does go wrong it will be a huge issue for the nfl that they will not be able to squeak out of.

ohh can anyone name a patriot who has been taken out for concussion protocol other than Vollmer and Edelman?
Connolly last year @ BUF?

No. You have to leave the game for at least one play unless a timeout is called or other stoppage is made.

That was before this new rule was implemented this year I believe.
The concussion protocol has been in place for years. These spotters have been in place since 2012. They just were given the authority to stop a game and have a player removed now if a player tries to stay on the field or a training staff misses an injury.

Didn't something happen last night where a player came out for a "shoulder injury" but then was seen taking smelling salts? Sounded fishy.

I think it was Adam Jones. So the players should be coached to do a reverse-Cosby when hit in the head?

Imagine Superbowl 50, Pats down by 2 points at the final two minute warning. We have the ball at our 20 with 2 timeouts. Plenty of time for Tom Brady. Brady hits Edleman (yes, he's back!) for an 11 yarder but gets a little tap as the ball is released. The Independent Medical Consultant pulls Tom from the game, takes him to the locker room (kicking and screaming), and puts him through the Concussion Protocol, never to be seen again ... ARGHH !

I know. The Medical Consultant is independent. The NFL* says so.

It scares me a just a little. Anybody else bothered by this new "Player Safety" system? Is there enough oversight built in to prevent abuse? Your thoughts?

Surely, you're not suggesting that the NFL* would ever abuse its authority or act in bad faith?

This is a silver bullet, they won't use this early in the season, it's the kind of thing they will use with bad faith one or two times tops.

If it happens in the SB, it will be too late.

That said, it sounds like there are some fairly objective criteria in place....Harder to abuse that way.

I was thinking the same thing. He barely got hit in the head. The league wanted the Bengals to win. Too bad it didn't work out.

I haven't ever been on the staff of any team and I'm still completely bias.

I recognize there is no reason to trust the integrity of the NFL. Greg Hardy, Deflategate, Ray Rice, etc. The leadership is empirically incompetent.

That said, I don't think you can avoid any action that can lessen the threat of concussions. The health of the players that entertain us is primary.

The rule is important. It's the right thing to do. NFL leadership may well abuse the rule. But increased concussion safety is the right move.

If the protocol is misused why do you think the League won't "squeak out"of anything?

The game will continue, the outcome will be determined and the league may or may not make a statement after the game on what occurred. Anything that "happens" after that will be inconsequential to the outcome of the game.

I think you've missed the point the OP is making. The ability for a league official to stop the game and remove a player solely at his discretion IS concerning, especially after the Brady case has shown the league does not alway act independently and fairly to all sides.

I did not miss it. See my first post in this thread.

He took a huge shot to the side of the head. He took himself out actually. I did not like the power they gave to these guys especially after citing the patriots as the reason for them in the first place. However, on the biggest stage, they will be stupid to make this the talking point to pull someone who is not concussed off.
