Ranking every Tom Brady/BB team

Great teams don't choke to the Jets in the ****ing playoffs at home.
I disagree. If Asante Samuel catches the ball or Eli is sacked then 2007 is the best team in NFL history. Yet they lost to the freaking Giants. A truly elite team that picked the very wrong time to have a bad game.

In 2010 were arguably the best team in the league. The offense was fire and Brady was a mistake free MVP. And we were certainly better than the Jets. FFS we beat them 45-3. We chose to have a god awful game at the worst time. A great team lost an inferior team that night. I was shocked. Probably the most painful loss behind SB 42. Even more than losing SB 46. All three were very painful. Yes that was a great team, but what we mostly remember is that loss...

2001 will always rank the best after languishing in the desert of mediocrity, mismagement and stupidity for all those years prior the first is always the best.. a lot of luck, but without regard the playoff win against Oakland in the snow and beating the "greatest show on turf", will always be the best.

Warner, Faulk et al are all still butthurt over this loss.. I smile.

I'm tempted to put the 2014 team at the top, mainly because they had to overcome much more off the field than those other teams. It was also more enjoyable because of how much it must have killed Goody and the Jetsons at the moment that The Butler Did It.

Normally, the first SB win would rank higher, but that was almost ruined by the Bledsholes and the Negative Nancys who looked at that win as a fluke. I never have and never will. Once the Pats gave the Lambs a tough game earlier in the year, I knew they were for real and would have a chance once they made the playoffs.

The best part about 2003-2004 is the consecutive game-winning streak and the two playoff knockouts of Peyton Manning. After the Pats held Indy to 17 total points in two games, the NYFL knew they had to do something so they Polianed the rules to allow Omahead to get his only ring.

Now, about the 2007 season. I don't think I've ever been as proud of the Pats as I was for the way they took the bull by the horns and went for 19-0. That's the mentality that makes them the great team that they are. Even though it was a gut-wrenching loss, I would do it all over again for another chance at shutting up Don Shula, once and for all.

That's the problem with rankings like these. There are too many good ones to choose from. Most NFL fans never have to deal with things like this. :)

I guess it all comes down to ranking the team as the best. Which best are we talking about. The best, most dominant team (2003 & 2004) or the team that gave us the most enjoyment (2001 & 2014).

I never thought that I would enjoy another SB as much as the first, but last year was very special.

Never forget the refs in 06. That is still a sb year stolen from us imho. That game probably inspired jump ball joe tactics seen today.

Great observation dm1.

It's too bad that Mike Periera (head of the NFL officials at the time) lost his battle against the sore losers competition committee that gave us the 50+ yard penalty for a borderline touch foul. Meanwhile, players can kick a guy in the face and get just 15 yards.

Then there's the nonsense about the DBs tackling the WR when they get beat. Most DBs who get beat can hardly get a hand on the WR let alone tackle him. It's why the NCAA never had that problem.

I came across a very important nugget of information....

Based on this alone, I would place the 09' team at the bottom of the rankings

You are severely over rating the 06 team. Held together with duct tape and inferior players.

Except for a BS PI call (which the NFL apologized for IIRC), the 06 team would have murdered the Bears and the Pat's would be trying for one for the other hand.

You can make an argument for either 2004 or 2014 as the top, with a weaker argument to be made for 2007 as well. cant let the ending cloud just how special that season really was though.

One of the most underratedly fun seasons for me was 2012. People often forget that was the second highest scoring Pats offense of all time, just barely behind 07 and if not for injuries in the playoffs a very like Super Bowl winning team imo

  • The 2012 Patriots featured a prolific offense that broke the record for first downs in a season, with 444
  • The team finished third all-time in scoring, with 557 points, finishing only behind the 2011 Green Bay Packers and their previous 2007 record setting season.
  • The 12' Patriots also ranked first in the league with a turnover margin of +25.

WTF happened in 2010? I really thought that was our year.

If we are just going on my love of the teams and not the ultimate end result, 2010 was my favorite team.

They traded Moss a few games into the season, and immediately the uproar from the media began.

So many awesome young players that season, it was really confirmation of Belichick and Brady's genius. This was the first time a completely new roster post-SBs could completely dominate. There had been skepticism and doubt that after losing so many players from the 2001-07 era, their days of being really elite were over, and they could still win but would never be that type of superpower again. They proved everyone wrong.

Danny Woodhead picked up after the Jets cut him. Devin McCourty plays like Revis as a rookie at CB. Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez emerge. Deion Brach returns. Everyone they throw into the mix becomes a star immediately. That team was awesome. Tragic ending, but this was a 14-2 team with a bunch of scrappers and rookies. They challenged the '07 team for overall offensive efficiency with a bunch of no names.

At one point they were on a tear that I really thought was more impressive than 07. They were absolutely dismantling everyone. Smashed Chicago on the road. 45-3 beat down on the Jets. Set a record for most points at Heinz by opponent vs Pittsburgh.

I didn't really like the 2011 team...felt much different from 2010. I felt the 2011 team was almost a letdown and didn't have the heart and emotion of the 2010 team. Even had they won the SB, I never really connected with that team.

After that, 2004 and 2014 are tied for second. Those teams could win on the road against elite opponents and always played their best against the best. 2007 is really close, but I can't ever shake the disappointing finish.

I loved branch coming back and being awesome, honestly it's probably my favorite thing besides the super bowl win in the last decade for the pats.

Don't care what anyone says. 2007 was the best team. Only reason people aren't ranking them as #1 is because they didn't win it all.

Someone needs to finally build a time machine so we can gather brady/bb patriots from different seasons and have them compete against each other. I guarantee 2007 would obliterate 2014. You think a veteran 2014 Revis would shut down 2007 Moss? Revis Island would get wiped out. 2007 has too many weapons for 2014 to handle.

Exactly. Give 2007 a defense like 2014 and this conversation is null and void. All the homers forget that it was the defense that won it in the end for 2014 and it was the D giving up that helmet catch that ultimately lost it for us (many say welker) in 07. Add Lafell and vereen(13 catches in SB and a few went for 1st downs) and you should be able to flex a little more offensively. BB said if you take away moss and jam welker that they were done. Gronk and Jules didn't see the coverage moss and wes saw because of lafell and vereen and i believe a slightly better o line for brady to get in a groove.

Blame Welker in 07? He would have been MVP if they won, IMO.

Thoughts?

Yes! Fun topic. I vehemently disagree with this:

#3 2004 - Honestly if things broke differently this team could be argued #1.

and this:

#5 2005 - This team was clearly super bowl level and should have won

2004 was the most complete team in during the run. Despite the injuries they were still a very good defense and they actually outscored 2007 in the second half of the season. This team isn't just the best Patriots team, it is one of the best teams to ever lace 'em up.

2005 wasn't as good as you say. They did a great job of straightening things out by December, but they were downright terrible on defense for much of the season. Do you recall them signing and starting a safety for a few weeks in the middle of year? They were also down numerous OL at the end of the Denver game, so they were no sure thing against Pitt or Seattle.

Maybe if we are assuming no injuries they might have been up there, but as is this is a bottom 5 team during Brady's tenure.

I'm also not sure about this:

#13 - 2002 - This team had its good points but the injuries really hurt it.

2002 was just a "bad" team. It wasn't injuries, it was that the team wasn't ready to defend their unexpected title the year before.
