Chargers announce a 4-year deal extension with franchise QB Phillip Rivers

This is why I keep thinking the NFL is headed for a cliff, and they've been riding a high that Goodell had Jack to do with.

Who is excited about watching Rivers? Who is excited about seeing what Eli will do this year? Ben? Anybody.

Brady and Manning is the greatest NFL rivalry of all time. As one sided as it's been it's the biggest game every year. When the Patriots aren't playing I'm watching Manning's team. These guys owned the NFL for the last 15 years.

When they're gone, Goodell and his "integrity of the game" BS won't matter.

The NFL is big because of great players, not because of great management. And it appears the greatest will be gone soon. And we'll be left with mediocre QBs and corrupt management. Not nearly as satisfying.

The NY Giants turned out to be a better-run franchise with a much more competent coach..... But I'm not sure if any of that factored into Eli's decision.

My guess is, he thought New York was the more lucrative market -- and wanted to rake in the extra $$$

Yeah, I realized that after I posted.

If Tom Brady had to lose two Super Bowl matches.... I would've rather it had been to Philip Rivers than to Eli Manning... I have more respect for him than I do for Eli

Was Elway a jackass for doing something similar?

Actually, that's unfair to Elway. It was a sports decision for him, but more of an "I want to be a BIG STAR" decision for Manning.

I don't blame players for using what little leverage they have. May not be the right choice IMO, but they don't owe the random team that happened to suck the most last year anything.

Almost everybody in this country has the right to not show up to work and not get paid. There was a war fought about that once. :)

But sometimes we can frown at the reasons people have for exercising their rights.

That said, athletes have less control over their employment than most people, so I'll rarely take a seriously harsh view of them exercising what you correctly call the "little leverage" they do have.

Rivers may have been more successful, however languishing under the poor coaching decisions of Norv for 6 of his 11 years may have impeded his progress(56 wins 40 losses)..

Mike McCoy is not exactly showing HOF material(18 wins 14 losses).. so the mediocrity of this team may continue.

Rivers has been qb in 4 post season games, losing all 4...

I can't believe it took so long to get done. Can you imagine what Phillip Rivers could get on the open market?

We tend to have these conversations every time a top 15 QB signs a new deal. The bottom line is that experienced NFL QBs get 20+ million dollars a year anymore. It's a fact, and it's pretty much been that way for a year or two.

If I'm the Chargers, I am very happy with my decision for the next 4 years. It's pretty much the only way they could've stayed competitive, and Rivers is the 5th or 6th highest rated (QBR) quarterback in NFL history. How could they NOT make this deal? What was their other option? Who else would they give his money to?

Eli "INT" Manning getting that $$ is LOL

It is, but the position is so vital that options are limited for moving on from him.
To take it one step further, Beckham, Cruz, and now Jones should help his cause much more.

In other words, you have to ask yourself how the NYG can stay competitive without him, barring a major trade of course. Even IF they'd get lucky and hit on a high draft pick at QB (low odds in my opinion), it would probably take at least 2-3 years for him to develop.

It almost seems like GMs are stuck paying the market rate anymore. I agreed with all of the recent big money pacts such as Romo, Rivers, Wilson, etc. The one I'd be leery about though = Andy Dalton.

Then the salary cap has got to be raised...if these $20+ million contracts are gonna become the norm, then the spending limit has got to be higher than it is now

How is that possible? They play in the same conference.

In the 2004 Draft, Eli was supposed to be chosen in the 1st round by San Diego, as the #1 overall draft pick. The Chargers coveted Eli and wanted to pick him as their first pick. But Eli indicated that he wouldn't sign with them. That's when the Chargers agreed to a trade with the New York Giants. The Chargers were forced to chose Rivers as their alternative draft option for QB. Manning was selected by the San Diego Chargers, then later traded for Rivers.

The New York Giants received:
  • Eli Manning, QB
The San Diego Chargers received:
If things originally went as according to plan, Eli would be playing in the AFC for San Diego now...and Rivers would be in the NFC as the QB for the Giants.

When you think about it, it's pretty outrageous that QBs who haven't even won a ring are making more $$$ than a 4x Super Bowl champ like Brady.

Geesh, we Pats fans must be lucky

unpopular opinion, but if im brady im pissed that garbage qb's like cam newton, kap, andy dalton, cutler, etc make more $$$ than me..
even the romo's/rivers of the world. how many playoffs wins do those chokers have combined??lol 6?? brady has 21!!

I know that. But we don't live in a world of hypotheticals. Only realities. And the reality is, Rivers plays for the Chokers in the AFC, and not the Midgets in the NFC.

QBs are so essential to present-day success in the NFL, that franchises are scared to lose decent ones. Teams feels forced to sign players like Rivers and Romo and Cam to ungodly amounts just to "not be stuck without a legit QB", but in doing so they hamper their chances of becoming more than a so so contender....

We are a lucky fanbase because Brady is relatively cheap, comparatively, and BB likes winning more than feelings.
