Ahh...

Thanks for the clarification.

I'm not sure the Pats could afford both McCourty and Revis Tune (they do have some big extensions coming up). There's only so much cap space to go around. My preference was for Revis to be extended but as Revis does, Revis proved he's for the money and left for a sizeable (stupid) deal. The team put its eggs in McCourty's basket and I'm fine with that.

Revis is about money and ego and not necessarily in that order. He is gone...lets move on, and keeping him would have just handcuffed the team in another area. We came within a whisker of losing the SB again and some overall D stats this past year were not really that much better than the prior year.

Also, I dont understand some of the whining. Curiosity about the backfield is fine but you cant have all-pros and great vets at every position. This is why there is a salary cap.

Just as much as we like to worry that the CBs will be crap there is also a chance they can be decent. Butler looks like a player and you have to get him snaps.

Plus, with the Pats, the whole is usually always greater than the sum of its parts. People get so caught up on names and stats. The team that wins is the one that has players on the same page, that do their job, that buy into a system, and trust each other and stay healthy.

You would think that following this team long enough would make this obvious.

personally, I think the pats are way better off with signing mccourty than the jets are signing mevis
The Jets needs to make "moves" to show their stupid fans that they are trying to win a SB. Unfortunately the Jets dont have BB and TB so they have to remain a 2nd tier AFC E team until that changes.

But they got Revis back!!!!!!!!! You can hold this over the fans of the Jets forever - DR had to come to the Pats to get a ring.

T4T --- week 15 very interesting....

According to the analysts at Pro Football Focus (subscription required), Brown was the fourth-best cover corner in the NFL last year. Richard Sherman, Casey Hayward and Charles Tillman were the three who received better coverage grades.

Despite being targeted 90 times by opposing quarterbacks, Brown only allowed 53 receptions for 719 yards. In addition, he didn’t surrender a touchdown pass during the regular season, and he led the 49ers with 14 passes defended.

1 note from th SI Revis article, he has had micro fracture surgery on his knee, didn't know about that in addition to the ACL. Not good for longevity, not worth the big bucks in the long term.

Last year was a real departure for Bill in going after big money cornerbacks. He has not done that in the past.
Hey Revis should give us the 2nd comp pick in the draft next year.

It is atypical however in Law, Asante and to a lesser extent Bodden and Talib, he will pay a good chunk of cash for above-average talent.

At the end of the day, 2014 Revis was a good deal for the Pats.

Yeah, I think the main reason why we weren't willing to offer Revis more is that Collins, Hightower, and Jones are all FAs in two years. If the Pats keep Revis and McCourty, then they're probably only keeping one of those three. As it is, I think they have a shot to keep all three of those guys if they're determined to, and even if not they can comfortably keep 2 while maintaining a lot of cap flexibility going forward.

There is the very real possibility the Patriots will have the best LB unit in the NFL this season and potentially the best LB in the NFL (Collins). I'm not going to pretend I wanted Revis to leave as it strengthens the Jets and weakens the Pats but more often than not, there are other pressures that must be factored into the equation.

According to Reiss, Brown is a contender for a starting CB spot. Not sure if this is an indictment on the talent pool at the position or belief that the Patriots have uncovered another "diamond in the rough"o_O

According to me he is too :p

I think Butler takes 1 starting spot for most of the year (even if he does not start at the beginning of the season). I think the other spot is wide open and could be Brown, Fletcher, Ryan, Roberts could all take it IMO depending on how the season goes.

McClain will almost surely get the nickle spot.

This should be a very interesting TC... stay tuned, still think that the Defensive Backfield may add one more piece before opening night..

BB is using his "Throw a bunch against the wall and hope a couple stick" method. We've seen it all before.

The obvious hope is that players either rebound (i.e. Fletcher) or grow (i.e. Butler) and become starting level CBs. We'll see if it happens, and we'll all hope that it does.

Agreed. Every team has to do that every year with a position group or two in the salary cap era. The Patriots enter this season about as sound at every position group except CB and RB as we've seen them. RB has a nice group of players with solid skills for different situations (I wish they'd kept Vereen.) CB doesn't look that bad to me.

Going into camp with so many good young players on the OL and DL gives me great confidence. The Patriots will continue to be very competitive so long as they can play tough, fundamental football in the trenches.

I'm not as pessimistic about this crew at CB as you are, but I don't see two clear starters a week before camp opens. You can't really lump all these guys together as the same type of player. There's a good range of NFL experience - many as effective starters in the right grouping. The front seven, and an experienced, smart safety group will help these guys a lot.

Tarell Brown looks like a good player from the 49ers highlights, and McClain has the ability to be effective. Malcolm Butler certainly looked like the real deal in the post-season, and clearly the coaches trust him. Logan Ryan is a terrific athlete who is now experienced enough to take that next step. Fletcher has experience as a starter and might be okay, but he never fully returned to form after tearing his ACL and MCL with the Rams.

Darryl Roberts is the wild card. Huge upside for a 7th rounder, but I have no expectations he'll contribute much early in the season.

I always thought DD was overrated, it's better than McDonalds but it isn't 2.5x as good (all about that value). Starbucks is pricey but it is great coffee. Not many make coffee as dark as them. I like it so dark that it disgusts me. Anyways as I hit post I forgot what thread I was even in.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I think Starbucks coffee tastes like ****. Double D's is okay in a pinch if you don't have access to real coffee.

I'm reserving judgment on the Tarell Brown signing. The write ups on him sound good but he's 5'10 and was on the IR last year.

Revis goes on IR early in the season and returns the next season a shell of his former self. So begins the epic karmic beat down the Jets have incurred upon themselves.

2011 turned out piss poor because McCourty got exposed. However, going into the 2011 season, there was a whole lotta joy in Mudville about him as a CB.

In addition, at least at this point in the offseason, there was still the hope Bodden would return.

^ Yeah so what happened with Bodden? I don't remember the details

I agree completely. The smartest thing to do was choose Revis or McCourty. The Pats chose a younger, player and a team leader with upside and a much cheaper contract.
