Georgia RB Gurley to visit Patriots

To me the question breaks down two fold. For me on one hand you can find quality backs in many different ways, so why waste a first rounder? But then I think about the 04 season and how beastly Corey Dillon was, so if you think you can get that dynamic to your offense then #32 seems like a small price.

I think most would prefer some magic option for CB, but I am open to improving the O - and it would be fun to have young stud RB for years to come.
Situation is a little different here.

In 03 the Pats had a dominant defense and a -lets face it blood from a stone offense. Dillon took them to the next level offensively and the D was a little weaker but still very good.

This time around the offense is fine, but the D took a seismic hit.

I like the promise of Gurley but I like a DT and/or CB being drafted more.

Gurley.

Remember the last highly-regarded Wisconsin skill-position player to do well in the NFL?

*crickets chirp*

It was Al Toon, who retired in 1992. You can take your chance on the guy who's continuing the legacy of James White, Montee Ball, Ron Dayne, Tony Simmons, Anthony Davis, Chris Chambers, Brian Calhoun, Lee Evans, Michael Bennett, Brandon Williams, Travis Beckum, and Nick Toon. I'd rather not, though.

JJ Watt has done OK.

I'm with you on Wisconsin RBs though. There is something to drafting certain positions from certain schools. I would also shy away from an WR from USC, although their LB seem to do well.
and of course, any defensive back from what used to be the Big East.

Georgia has put out great defensive lineman for years now.

I want to quote a couple of Bill Belechick statements.

1. With the CAP, the NFL is becoming like college football where you must turnover the team every four years. ".

2. RB are the easiest players to scout and draft and to play immediately. They have a limited playing career. So they are replaceable." i.e don't resign them...

BB did not re-sign either of his starting RBs. He let them walk and I expect he will draft at least one before the end of the 4th round, and maybe two. Just like Shane Vereen and Stephen Ridley who went late second and early third, four years ago...

I see absolutely no reason to add WRs or TEs, the squad is full up with good and some great talent. But the RBBC squad must add some talent to go with the current numbers.

Reserve the high picks for long career linemen. Good linemen will make the RBs look better, no matter their talent level.

BTW, Do any of you realize that the Pats Offense has but a single First Round player, starting LOT Nate Solder ? That is placing a lot of weight on aging Tom Brady to produce a good Offense. Meanwhile there are 5 First rounders and 5 second round starters on Defense, plus some other young stars like Ninko/Butler/Fonzie/Arrington etc..

Patriots seem to be all about zone blocking and getting the opposing defense to move laterally on running plays so an RB with vision and patience seems to be more important than a "beast" RB.
AMEER ABDULLAH, JAY AJAYI, or TEVIN COLEMAN could be had in the 2nd round and seem to fill the need fine.

I have him at the top of the list. I seriously doubt he will be there but of those with any chance of falling to #32 he is the player I would take first. That's based upon the scouting reports that have him as a franchise caliber back, he would make their run game a force to be reckoned with and take a load off their OL in protecting the QB as opposing defenses would have to honor the run. I have guard and CB as their to needs but if you can get an all pro RB you do it. They still have plenty to get the guard and CB as well as meet other needs.

Curtis Martin was a 3rd round pick. Ridley was a 3rd. I agree that we could easily find a franchise RB in the 2nd or 3rd round, especially this year where the draft class is widely regarded to be unusually deep.

Too easy to fall in love with the "elite" prospect (at any position), but as already mentioned, Trent Richardson and Lawrence Moroney prove that first round pedigree does not guarantee you're getting a franchise back.

Believing that Gurley is a "sure thing" is naive. Gurley and Gordon could both turn out to be quite mediocre pros. Of the entire draft class, my guess is that Abdullah will be the best pick, and superior value in the 2nd, but really who can say?

I apologize but obviously "which round in the draft to take a RB" is a very emotional subject.;)

Would love Jones in the first Coleman in the second
Coates or Conley in the third
Then Build the lines on both sides of the ball the rest of the draft

I would say that if Gurly is there, he is an excellent pick. The guy has all the tools, can catch, run with power, run with speed....He has very uncommon talent for a RB.
