Serious question for any current or former lawyers out there (I know what snark can be piled on this -- I'd be one of the people doing it ) but I honestly would like to know what Wells is at least theoretically governed by:
When an organization hires a lawyer to do an internal investigation, makes it public that it has hired said lawyer, and says the lawyer's report of the investigation will be made public, what do the rules of legal ethics say about how the lawyer is supposed to balance doing an honest job ("honest" in the sense of not blowing off stuff that makes the organization look bad) with advancing the interests of his client?
