The Patriots vs Packers POST Game Thread

This game shows that this pats team has no business to win a payoff game on the road. If they cannot secure HFA, no way they get to the SB.

No excuses necessary.

They lost to a great team in their house. It happens. There are positives to be taken going forward, and a lot of mental mistakes that need to be corrected. The Patriots didn't play this game on their terms. Going forward, they need to retain that killer instinct that they had during the winning streak.

Playing too tentatively cost them in the end today. The pass rush needs to recapture its identity and Logan Ryan should not be covering anyone on the boundary going forward.

The play calling in this game was so damn frustrating. Packers taking 6 minutes off the clock every drive and you're going empty back field. Running backs getting several yards per carry but instead try for the quick score. The TOP killed us since the defense couldn't get off the field with so few opportunities to get the ball you have to make it count. The entire team was a mess tonight. We're lucky the score was as close as it was. it at least gives me confidence that if they play again and get their s^&% together they can win.

Pass rush was non-existant and the Pats didn't stop the Packers on their side of the field nearly enough to win. When you add in that and the OL struggles, you have two big components needed for a loss.

Yeah. I kept yelling at TV. Where is the pass rush/blitz? Rodgers is like Brady. Give time to a QB and he will pick you part.

Other thing I noticed was so many shot-guns on the offense. It immediately tells the packers-D that it's a pass. In previous games, Pats didnt do that many shot-guns.

IMO - 4th-18 Patriots shouldve gone for end-zone. The attempted FG was really a bad play.

Lost to a great home team and a hall of fame qb on the road...not going to b#tch much about this one. The gronkowski play in the ez on the last drive was a head scratcher but whaddya gonna do...21 pts aint gonna do it on the road....sucked that the defense, even though they only gave up 26, let gb go up and down the field at will...

A few thoughts on the game.
  1. The officials screwed the Patriots by consistently ignoring Packer WR push-offs and OPIs all game.
  2. Corners 3-5 were ****house. Rodgers embarrassed them.
  3. McCourty and Chung were ****.
  4. No pass rush.
  5. I didn't see any Defensive Linemen put their hands up at the LOS to try and bat the ball down.
  6. Ninkovich consistently over pursued and lost edge contain. Lacy picked up some big plays.
  7. Patriots OL was meh.
  8. Patriots use of the run game was meh.
  9. Brady was meh outside of his moments of brilliance.
  10. The Patriots lost the game on two critical players, one at the end of the first half and on Solder's whiff leading to the 3rd down sack.
  11. Tough game against a tough team at home. A lost opportunity.
  12. Red Zone D was brilliant.
All of that and the game was still there to be won. That's the one encouraging thing. Green Bay cannot play a better game than that and they just squeaked by the Pats. They're a good team but very beatable.

I like points 2-12

They mismanaged the last drive in the end. Even if Gronk scores the TD, rodgers had enough time with 4 downs to score a game winning FG. Had to use the run game or short passing game at that time. I put that on Brady/JMcD

Even 80% of 32.5 is 26 points.

A) Ghost missed a FG that would've made it 24.
B) I looked it up and it's actually 75% the # of possessions, Pats average 11 non-kneeldown drives per game, had 8 today.
C) To make it simpler, I have repeatedly put the points per drive stat. Going into today, Patriots average 2.7 points per drive. They had 2.63 today, an awfully similar number, wouldn't you say? And that number is 3 if Ghost doesn't whiff. So, they would've been more productive.

QB: Brady played well, I can't remember to many bad throws that weren't affected by heavy pressure. Amendola overran the hole in the zone on one 3rd down. Gronk almost made a great catch to win the game. Brady dealt with the pressure very well I thought, especially with the environment.

OLine: Decent job handling Capers' blitzes. A couple plays were just awful, like the sack late in the 4th. Also, they got almost zero push on runs, especially the draw plays to Vereen. Cannon got abused on the play Matthews hit TB's arm.

RB: Vereen is terrible running between the tackles, when will McD stop calling that play. He also dropped a pass in the flat as well. Blount heated up in the 2nd half, when McD actually ran the ball.

WR: Thank goodness JE is OK. Him and LaFell played pretty damn well. Dobson, I'm done. He's officially injury prone.

TE: Good job all game. Gronk, Hooman, and Wright all played well. Hooman had that beautiful catch down the sideline and Wright wasn't in many plays but made a good catch. Why do we not utilize him more? Maybe put him in the backfield like Hernandez, where he can block and help the oline or catch passes out of the backfield.

DLine: Ayers had a nice sack on Rodgers that was called back on the BB penalty. Wilfork played well against the run I thought, by clogging up some holes. Ninkovich was put in bad positions. Covering Cobb out of the backfield? Good luck. I'm counting down the days to Chandler Jones' return, because it's pathetic the lack of pass rush we get. That being said, zero holding penalties on the GB oline?

Secondary/LB: Overall I thought they played well within their system. Hoody loves the bend but don't break defense but it killed them in the long run, with the TOP being extremely lopsided. Revis was expecting help to the middle and McCourty misread it. The penalty on Browner that negated the Ayers sack was AWFUL.

Coaching: I've said it on here before, McDaniels abandons the run way too early. He went back to it in the 2nd half and they moved the ball pretty well. BB/Patricia's gameplan didn't work. They couldn't get off the field and allowed Rodgers AND Lacy to beat them with their legs. Hoody didn't take either away which didn't help. I DID agree with the FG attempt at the end.

I agree that the best road to Arizona is through the Razor, but after the Indy game and tonight's tough matchup at Lambeau, I feel more confident than I did a few weeks ago that they can go anywhere and win, when they play up to their potential... regardless of venue.

My first thought is that I'd have liked to reply to some posts late in the in-game thread.

Second thought is, I should thank the heavy handed moderators for reminding me that this board may not be the best use of my time.

C ya later.
You're welcome.

You can't score if you don't have the ball. It's the same reason why the Jet's almost beat us the first game. That game we had 28 points

Lack of Pass rush might be the death of us like it's been the last several years
I kind of agree. These elite QBs are way too good to let them sit back there forever.

I think BB and his staff didn't put enough effort on this game during the Thanksgiving week. Shame on them. Now they must win all the remaining games.

That long Jordy Nelson TD was a back breaker but not being able to pressure Rodgers and when there was not being able to contain him really killed the game.

All well and good except they didn't hit the FG. So, offense didn't get close enough and ST wasn't as great as they have been, which was the content of my original post.

No pass rush, no pass rush, no pass rush. That's really what it came down to.
