1) "His speciality is getting his mitts on a WR and physical driving him to the turf off the LOS."

Which is why, in 2014 with the new rules, he will be a yellow flag magnet. The environment has changed. You are referencing previous year environments. There is a reason he was the first penalty of the 2014 NFL Preseason. Don't think for a second the refs won't be cognizant of his reputation. Bedard spotlighted as much in his Pats preview today.

You think seattles D is going to change? Nope. And they will be right on the door of the SB yet again. If Revis and Browner don't stay aggressive..we will have issues.

And no Ryan has not beaten out Dennard...yet

It Is What It Is >> Thursday practice notes: Patriots, Eagles engage in low-intensity pregame walkthrough without Jerod Mayo

Some excerpts:

– Left tackle Nate Solder departed practice roughly 30 minutes early with a member of the team’s medical staff. It didn’t look like Solder was injured, but it’s certainly something worth keeping an eye on. As for the rest of the offensive line, Marcus Cannon appeared to get the majority of reps in Solder’s place, while Jordan Devey also worked extensively with the ones.

Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady got their usual work off to the side together. No Revis this time, though. When it comes to the tight end position, with the release of Ben Hartsock earlier in the day and the injuries to Williams, Hoomanawanui and Gordon, the Patriots have one healthy tight end (Steve Maneri) heading into Friday’s contest against the Eagles. It is worth noting that fullback James Develin has been working extensively with the tight end group over the course of the spring, and lined up there an awful lot on Thursday morning. Look for more of that Friday night.

Genuine question. Does Browner actually not play well in space? I seem to remember some youtube videos (not indictive of general play) where he is laying people out while covering in zone.

Could it possibly be scheme related as Pats and Seahawks played more man and therefore he could have gotten this reputation? I am not sure as i have not seen a ton of him playing other than the highlights.

Here's Pete Carroll giving his take on Browner by using positives. Take note of what's not said:

“That’s when he’s at his best, on the line of scrimmage," Carroll said Wednesday at the NFC coaches breakfast. “He’s built for that. He’s so long, so big and so aggressive...

...He’s played bump-and-run press technique since he was a freshman in college, back at Oregon State."

For a media analysis, here's Nick Underhill with his take on Browner's game:

In reviewing Browner, it became clear that there are times when his hulking build is a disadvantage. When he's forced to quickly move his hips and does not anticipate having to do so, he can be exploited...

...One prevailing thought after Browner was acquired was that he was might be converted to strong safety
. After initial review, this seems unlikely. Not only would such a move negate his best abilities, Browner appears to be at his weakest when operating in zone coverage. There were several instances when he appeared unsure of what to do when in zone, and bounced back and forth as the play was unfolding in front of him.

Doug Kyed has a similar take.

I think we tend to overvalue injury history -- assuming that players who have been injured in the past will be injured again, and that players who have been healthy will stay healthy. So McCourty is not perceived as an injury "risk," even though being an NFL DB is pretty much the definition of injury risk.

Good point. The average NFL career is short and there are lots of injuries every year. If player has a long career, the injuries can even out (see Willie McGinest). If a player is less talented and suffers one or more serious injuries, he seems "injury prone."

There are some players who can't play with injuries or are indeed prone to injury (Wheatley had something wrong with his wrists, others have seemed to not have a solid enough frame or congenital disorders).

Mostly, though, it's just a couple bad rolls of the dice IMO.

It Is What It Is >> Ryan Mallett: Two missed practices were 'maintenance' days

Many wondered what was wrong with quarterback Ryan Mallett when he missed both Sunday and Monday’s practices. That was in the wake of last Thursday’s preseason game against the Redskins where he slid awkwardly at one point in the first half on his left knee.

Following Thursday’s walk-through with the Eagles, Mallett cleared the air.

“Just maintenance stuff,” the 26-year-old said when asked about the absences.

Mallett did wear a heavy brace/sleeve on his left leg for the three joint sessions with the Eagles, but insists that wasn’t anything new.

“Same thing — I didn’€™t change anything. Same old, same,” said Mallett.

Juslt my opinion, but Devlin has looked great catching the ball and running routes. His hands are amazing for a kid who played DE in college. Like I said in my practice report, Devlin is someone that all the QB's seemed to be comfortable throwing to. He's not going to make anyone forget Kevin Faulk, but running Hback and move TE routes doesn't seem to be a problem

I was referring to Devin McCourty, the safety, not Devlin the fullback! :)

4 receptions for 39 yards, that should pass his receiving yards for the Pats

I wonder how many people got that. Nicely done, Mr. Snuka!

Patriots Camp Report: Day 22 - espnBoston

      • Is left tackle Nate Solder hurting? Although this wasn't a physical practice, that was one question asked when Solder didn't finish Thursday's walk-through, walking off a bit before practice ended. Solder is coming off a rough preseason opener.
      • Linebacker Jerod Mayo was absent for the third straight practice. Mayo didn't appear to injure himself in the last practice he was part of, on Monday.
      • The Patriots have a shortage at tight end after releasing veteran Ben Hartsock, who had just signed Sunday. The team has made seven different transactions at tight end since Sunday, and with top tight ends Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams all limited or not practicing, it leaves Steve Maneri as the lone healthy tight end at the moment. Fullback James Develin could also see extended time in a tight-end-type role.

So when is Brady getting 2 maintenance days off?

To me, injury prone means "more susceptible to wear-and-tear" injuries or "less likely to play through wear-and-tear injuries", or both. If a guy tears his ACL, that doesn't make him injury prone (maybe if he keeps re-tearing the same ACL, to the point that you have to figure it's compromised in a way that makes him more a lot more prone to re-injury). If he's consistently sitting out with stuff like tendinitis, turf toe, hamstring issues, groin pulls, back problems, etc., then he's probably injury prone.

The key, in this case, is that these are the sorts of injuries that some guys just seem to be more prone to, and it's also the kind of injury that some guys will play through (and remain effective) and others won't. There's also a pretty large element of hindsight/confirmation bias. Once you've decided that a guy is injury prone, it's easy to look back through his history and cherrypick all of the times that he's showed up on the injury report, and the resulting account will make it look like he's always injured. What gets lost in that is that you can do that for almost every player. Even the iron men are showing up on the injury report all the time. And draft hindsight is even worse. For every Ras-I Dowling, who drops due to health concerns and those issues carry over into the pros, there's a Chandler Jones, who dropped for the same reason but has only had one injury--of moderate significance, which he played through--in two seasons of heavy workload.

The really hard ones to classify are guys who seem to consistently suffer "freak" injuries - the sort that could happen to anyone with one unlucky hit. Yet, in a lot of cases, these injuries seem to cluster on certain individuals. Jon Beason is a great example of this. Most of his injuries have been of this type: torn ACLs, blown achilles, messed up shoulder, etc.; but just considering how many of these injuries he's had, it's impossible not to conclude that he's injury prone. Gronk is bordering on this territory as well.

From what I have seen, Browner can play in space but usually overcomes his limited speed with brute force. Think of a player who tries to dislodge the ball by hammering the intended WR/TE/RB rather than beating them with coverage.

Browner at the safety position would be a slightly worse version of Bernard Pollard. Awful in coverage back there, but he could make highlight reel hits. Though I would love to have a guy that can do both, I'm not willing to sacrifice one for the other.

He's what Tebucky Jones was supposed to be.

Very apt comparison, IMO, although if anything Jones was supposed to also be more athletic than Browner, mostly on account of his great combine. I'm sure that Pete Carroll was thrilled to have Jones, though, for the same reason that he was happy to get Browner.

I initially thought that a move to SS might be in the works with Browner but after reading a number of reports regarding his skill set and strengths and weaknesses pretty much ruled it out, desirable as it may have been because of his size. I think he is primarily going to end up being used against bigger receivers and TE's with Dennard and Ryan mixing in to help with the smaller quicker receivers.
