Devin McCourty contract talks in progress

Well when I listened to Rodney Harrison on Boston talk radio a few months ago and he said the Pats need better play from their safety position that is coming from an expert. He clearly said they are lacking physical play in that area of the team and he suggested they need to pickup an impact guys.

Says it all for me.

No he asked me to rank who I thought was top this or that. Sort of like the guy who wrote Brady not top 5. Can go either way. I think past college classes have taught me what an opinion is vs a question is.
Rodney was pretty clearly talking about a SS type. In other words, he was talking about the guy lining up across from McCourty. I agree with him.

EDIT: JMC beat me to it.

Is this it is this the best we got. Wheres the Ravens, Broncos, games where are those plays when it matters.
the best FS in the NFL only had 4 INT's and 9 pdef ( Jarius Byrd ) after Ed Reed there have only been a hand full of FS that have ever been super stars in the History of the NFL its not a flashy position and bottom line is he just makes the whole secondary better,

and the playoff games your talking about offense defense ST and coaching was bad in all of them one man cant win a playoff game on his own

Dmac is good, a lot of time he is very good, but he isn't elite. You don't pay good/vg players elite money. He is a must resign but he isn't a break the bank 8+ mill guy. Flame and dislike my post all you want but that is the truth.

The NFL disagrees with you. Maybe you can flame and dislike them?

How so? Because a few players are overpaid and get more than 8 mill? Because you think so? He hasn't even had an offer so you can't even judge how the team values him. So you agree that paying good players elite money is good practice? If so, thank god you don't run a franchise.

Thomas is the only safety worth that money. The bucs and their fans regret the Goldson deal. Byrd is unproven yet with his large contract. Weddle is very good and worth 7-8. Mccourty is worth no more than Weddle, imo.

What does pay have to do with what were are discussing?

I like Devin a lot and he's impressed me the last couple of years, but too me he's a low-end tier II FS.

Tier I
Earl Thomas
Jarius Byrd

Tier II
Weddle
Goldshon
Devin
Griffin

-maybe between 4-7M and probably closer to 6-7 is market range

Um, maybe the fact that it's a thread about his possible contract extension....

The market is what it is. You repeatedly saying it's too high doesn't magically lower the market.

I am talking about your claim that he is not an elite safety VS the rest of the world who disagrees.

Lets fix that problem first before we get into what everyone thinks he "deserves"

Teams overpaying do not equal the market. Because Haynesworth signed a $100 mill deal doesn't mean every top 5 defensive lineman is worth 80-100 million deals.

If you think the "rest of the world" thinks Dmac is elite, you are one blind ass homer. Ed Reed in his prime was elite, Dmac ain't no Ed Reed. He is very good, but he isn't a every game changing player that teams fear. He is an impact player, no bout though.

Yes, teams "overpaying" does equal the market value, because the market value is what teams will pay. You don't seem to be able to understand that basic concept.

market value [uncountable and countable]
1the value of a product, building etc based on the price that people are willing to pay for it
, rather than the cost of producing it or building it

market value
n.
The amount that a seller may expect to obtain for merchandise, services, or securities in the open market.

I am a homer because DMC was an allpro player and deserved it? Which means the NFL coaches and players think he is elite. Please tell me you have more than some lame homer insult.

Again, what does a prime Ed Reed have to do with how DMC should be currently judged againt his peers. Talk about a strawman.

Either way Devin has a lot to prove this year. Lets see how he does

Even accepting your 5th-place rating, I don't follow how you get from there to $4-7M. Every player on your list makes more than $7M per year, even on contracts signed several years ago.

I would think "market range" would have to start at $8M minimum.

Isolated events of overpaying do not equal market values. If they did, all premier DE/DL would want $100 mill deals. Just because something can be purchased for a higher amount, doesn't make it worth that amount, nor does it set the market value for it. A $1 hershey bars market value is $1, not $20 if some fat kid desperately wants it.

He really, really doesn't.

I agree and was going to comment on that. He is doing just fine. Another year like last year would be super.

I view FS as QBs. Currently there are 2 that are above the rest and really Earl is above anyone else. I know the MV is really high, but is it worth it to pay 8M for a FS that can't do what Earl and Byrd too, it's like paying Flacco and Eli money similar to the big 4 QBs. I think his real value is less than 8M, and if it is that much, we'll have to think about it.
