Little immediate help -- implications?

And if Easly comes in and contributes and Garoppolo does succeed Brady and turns out to be good and the Pats are still a contender in the AFC?

Would it still be the worst draft in a long time? No it wouldn't

stop it

draft success is determined before the 4th round starts every year!

I still think Vereen and Chandler Jones would be picks that could make people smile :)

I prefer Exum to Vereen.. just as good in coverage and will gives us more size/diversity on the back end

I'll say this much: I'm not going to rate any draft pick at the time he's drafted. An objective rating can't be done until after his initial contract is up.

What do you guys think of Antone Exum (Safety) and Trey Burton (TE)?

garoppolo won't see the field for three seasons....

3 rounds in, we only have only picked two players have addressed 0 needs.

There is nothing wrong with giving an opinion. The problem, especially on this board, is pretending you have anywhere near enough information for that opinion to be anything more than a guess.

A replacement for a 37 year old QB is certainly a need.

A DT that can give us an inside pass rush was arguably one of the biggest needs.
Moving down 12 picks and adding another pick should fill 2 needs.

This x1000

In the end, we did get immediate help at positions of need. As many as 7 players could contribute this season (all but Garrapolo).
1) a pass-rushing DT who should be ready for camp (certainly for the season)
2) a quality backup QB
3/4/5) three potential starters on the OL (Stork might even start this year)
6) a RB who may compete with Vereen as the 3rd down back (we needed a 4th RB)
7) competition for Bequette
8) competition for Tavon Wilson

First round pick -- guy who could be a major star, but is still recuperating from injury.
Second round pick -- guy who we hope doesn't play for years.
Next picks -- TBD, but they start in the fourth round.

Clearly, the Patriots were comfortable not filling immediate needs with high-rated players. I'm OK with that, considering:

  • DBs are pretty set, starters and depth alike.
  • Front Seven is set for starters, although depth is questionable.
  • OTs are set at least 3 deep.
  • Interior OL is set, although quality and depth are both debatable. Also, low-drafted/undrafted interior OL have contributed well in the past.
  • RB is in decent shape, if we assume Ridley can play and Blount can be replaced by another cheap pickup (if desired).
  • WR has a lot of returning talent.
  • QB got added to.
  • STs have a lot of returning talent.

I didn't mention TE in the above list, but no roster is perfect ...

Why does Vareen make people smile? He is an oft injured and an under performer. His career high is about 600 all purpose yards, about what Woodhead had in his worst year as a Patriot.

I wish I could hold hope against hope and say "Look of for 2014" but he is already complaining about an injury. The guy is a great talent that breaks, durability is the best ability in the NFL.

Now Jones, he is different. Great player, great pick, played 99% of the downs last year. May never be LT but works his butt off, stays on the field and is productive.

Poor asset management, period. BB the coach is BB the GM's worst enemy. He thinks improving his team through the draft is a waste of time.

So your assertion is the pats didn't improve through the draft in 2014. Unless you have the gift of Nostradamus what you just stated is a pure guess. How one can claim this not even a day after the day is finished is beyond me. Did these players play the 2014 season? Is the season over? Did i miss it? Heck can you tell me if we are to make the SB bowl this year? Lottery numbers perhaps.

It's a board and i understand people have opinions which is why IMO, my 2 cents should be used. The assertion that this team doesn't improve through the draft is false and that makes your opinion not fact but opinion, not relevant.
