Patriots are "incredibly high" on QB Tom Savage

So the draft is looking like this based on reports –

#29 Manziel
#62 Bridgewater
#93 Savage
#130 Mettenberger
#140 McCarron

It is unlikely Savage to last to 3rd round. From the reports I have heard several teams are interested in him. He's a goner in the 2nd round.

The thing is.... If you pay attention to reports, there will be something like 425 players taken in the first 3 rounds.

Even though I'm not high on him either, Aaron Murray would be better value. He at least looks off DB's. Murray's problem is that he has a gunslinger habit that he sometimes settles into.

I'd love to have Murray, myself.

My concern is that he's going to go a little higher than our expected target range of rounds 3-4, but who knows.

TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline reports the Patriots are "incredibly high" on Pittsburgh QB Tom Savage.

The talk of the quarterback position the past few weeks has centered around Tom Savage of Pittsburgh. So what’s the inside story? Ever since the combine I’ve known the New England Patriots have been incredibly high on Savage and will consider using a pick to acquire the signal caller during the draft. Some in the organization are now referring to Savage as “Tom #2”, with Tom #1 of course being Tom Brady. I’m told Savage impressed the franchise during combine interviews, especially when former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano was on hand. Evidently Savage took responsibility for the 2011 situation when he left the Rutgers football program, which was then headed by Schiano. Both the Patriots and Schiano were impressed by Savage’s maturity in discussing his departure. Teams who’ve studied tape on Savage from last season broke it into halves and feel the second half of the campaign, when the signal caller lessened his mistakes and improved his accuracy, is the next level prospect they can build upon.

Keep McDaniels out of the war room. Same guy who loved Kevin O'Connell in the 3rd round.

Just got out of one smoke filled room and wham, right in the middle of another one. This one has mirrors TOO.

All i can say about the guy is that he has a cool name.

Tom Savage

Yes but if they confuse him at all with, or think he is related to Michael Savage, he would make it tough for the Patriots to play in London. The plane would get refused entry once the English got a hold of the manifest.

I am convinced the reason pats are looking into all these QBs and want to trade down from 29 with a team that wants to jump back into the 1st round to take a QB

The BS quotient is high on this one, Grasshopper

Tony Pauline = Tom Savage's agent

No. They're looking at them partly because their back-up is probably leaving next season and partly because their starter is 37 years old. That doesn't mean that the Pats will draft any of them. But they are doing their due diligence for those reasons, and that's very smart of the team.

So, we have an inaccurate QB who forces the ball into double coverage but the upside is that he’s got a strong arm? This is precisely the kind of QB you don’t want, he seems much more like Bledsoe, who BB dumped, than TFB.

Give me the smart, accurate QB with ice in his veins and the mediocre arm rather than Savage.

Like most people have said, the Pats have better internal security about what they think about draft picks than the CIA. If there are leaks, its because they want it out there. Just remember the more QB's drafted in the first 3 rounds means better players available for the Pats at the end of those rounds. In my opinion, the QB that the Pats need this season will have 3 key qualities.

1. Be smart, hardworking, and have the physical ability to play in the NFL

2. Have a flaw (ie small college, injury, etc) that will keep him undrafted

3. Be uninteresting enough that no one will grab him off the PS

Ladies and Gentleman I give you Jeff Matthews - Cornell - Good enough for the Pats to keep him on the PS as the team's 3rd arm and see how he develops. Not good enough that he'll need a draft pick to get him.

Jeff Matthews - The good - Great arm, great size (6'4-230) smart, hard working, quick release, decent college production.

The bad - not a great athlete, dominated but it was the Ivy League, bad footwork, questionable mechanics, played in a shot gun/pistol offense.

He sound like a perfect fit. Give him a year with great coaching and a proven system, and see what happens. If he "gets it" the Pats may have found a decent back up for nothing. If he doesn't, so what?!

The only other QB I'd be interested in using a draft pick on is Logan Thomas, and that's because I want to make him a TE. Just say NO to draftable QB's this year. ;)

FWIW from Mike Loyko:
Last night news began to swirl about the Patriots and their “love” for Pittsburgh QB Tom Savage. Patriots fans can relax a little as I am told there isn’t much truth to the rumor. Savage didn’t exactly leave Rutgers on good terms with Head Coach Greg Schiano and the Patriots definitely don’t like him enough to pick him where he’s going to get picked. They’ve done an extraordinary amount of homework on QBs compared to past seasons and while it appears they are interested in adding another QB, they aren’t using a 1st or 2nd Round pick on Tom Savage

For once, I agree with Schiano. If this report is true (and not disinformation) then thank God. Some scouts are just as easily wooed by a cannon arm as your average fan is.

Who might this be?
