"Russell Allen: Long considered a solid depth linebacker for the Jaguars, Allen has emerged as one of the best players on the Jaguars defense. After earning a +3.4 grade against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4, he earned a +2.4 against the Rams and is now ranked as PFF's best 4-3 outside linebacker, a ranking that often featured Daryl Smith near the top. Particularly strong on Sunday was his ability in coverage, where he earned a +1.5 grade against the Rams."

We need an OLB and someone with coverage. Thoughts Cousins?

PFF had this guy as their best 4-3 OLB?

As if I needed more reason to think PFF = toilet paper.

That being said, he's young and his strengths match up well against our weaknesses. With the disclaimer that I haven't watched a lot of Jags football, on paper he seems like a good target.

I read somewhere that Allen was released by Jacksonville because he failed their physical. He went on IR due to concussion(s) late last year, so I'm guessing he has not yet recovered from that.

DW, I'm curious why you called Allen's release a cap move? Jacksonville is flush with cap space.

Allen was already losing playing time and then ended the year on IR with a serious concussion, so he wasn't worth his salary to the Jaguars. Caveat emptor.

The article mentioned freeing up cash. Touche on your retort. They are not CAP stretched. I further read they want to get younger. Kid is only 28 so go figure. He might not be a starter here but if he can fill a role. He could be the Fletcher replacement. Had a concussion his last game. Don't know how they read the time frame for OTA etc.
I understand that they picked someone up they feel could replace him from the Vikings taxi squad. Perhaps there is the $ deal.

Well he did FAIL his physical... If the guy gets healthy, maybe we could pick him up for a look close to the time TC starts. But he has to get healthy first.

Wow, still hasn't recovered after 4 months? That must have been a pretty brutal concussion.

I would look at him for depth, he is solid, the PFF ranks are way off he is not a top LB he is a marginal starter.

After reading further, I was not aware of the concussion, that obviously would be a concern but if healthy, I would consider him as #4/#5 LB.

Per Rotoworld:
Allen graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 17 4-3 outside linebacker among 34 qualifiers, but is a replacement-level run stuffer.

Jaguars placed WLB Russell Allen (concussion) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Must have been a really nasty concussion which is scary that he still can't pass a physical but definitely worth a look though.
