The state of Rhode Island is teeming with Yankees and Giants fans.

Very true.....and Connecticut is still a 'burb of New York and not really a part of New England at all.

Southwest Connecticut has communities which are suburbs of New York, i..e.Greenwich, Stamford. But those communities and residents roughly east of Interstate 91 clearly consider themselves New Englanders. I base that opinion on having lived there at one time. I now live in southern Worcester County and can get to Storrs where UConn is in an hour. Storrs is not a suburb of New York.

Storrs is not a suburb of anything. ;)

Very true and makes their ri$e a$ a college ba$ketball powerhou$e all the more "intere$ting".

What exactly is the draw to get kids to flock to the rural woods of Northeast Connecticut?? Hmmm...... ;)

I actually don't give a **** about UCONN but this thread does show how everyone in mass just thinks New England begins and ends in Boston, anything outside there is not worth mentioning. People do mix their sports here all the time, there are a good number of Red Sox/Giants fans and Yankees/Pats fans in CT that doesn't mean anything we are just as much New Englanders as you and we don't drive like ****s either, well that's not true but we certainly drive better than m*******s.

Here's a map: Baseball Fandom. Not an inch of New England outside of CT is Yankees territory. Don't get mad at facts.

Exactly. It's just like the Patriots 3 Super Bowls. There's a reason they haven't won since they were caught cheating.

These two teams have a lot in common. Mediocre coaches whose reputation for winning is based on a complete sham!!

was I mad at facts? I said it was no big deal that people in Ct supported other teams I just said that m*******s think everything has to happen in Boston or its not important

Feel free to show me where anyone said/implied that. People are making the very real point that CT is nearly a suburb of NYC, fan-wise. But your repeated use of "M*******s" tells me that you're wicked reasonable.

How is it a very real point? One county in CT shown in that map is mostly NY fans. And that's logical, because people in those counties work in NY and commute back to CT. If Rhode Island bordered another major metro area you'd see part of RI rooting for that metro area's teams as well.

I agree. I'm getting tired of CT getting crapped on by people from Mass as well. I go to school in Boston and you'd think New England begins and ends with northeastern Massachusetts. People also forget CT had its own NHL team, which is why for at least one major sport people don't necessarily feel obligated to root for Boston teams.

"Hurr hurr hurr CT is not even part of New England." You get losers like Tony Mazz for 98.5 pulling that crap all the time, including using it for a reason to root against UConn in the NCAA final.

By the way, UConn is closer to Boston than UMass Amherst.

Man, CT people are sensitive.

Also, I've lived and worked in NY for 15 years. By your logic, I should be a NY sports fan.

Anyway, I like CT. It's a fine state. But its rooting interests aren't aligned with the rest of NE.

Is being a U Conn fan really all that satisfying considering only 2 players on the men's team are from Conn. and they combined for a 2 point/game average this year while the woman's team had one Conn. native and she managed one pt/game.
"My mercenaries are better than your mercenaries!!"
At least in pro sports the payoffs are out in the open. Call me old fashioned but the State school should represent the best of the state. All U Conn proved is that they are best at the "bizness" of collegiate hoop.
And being an alum of a high school that turned into an out of state feeder system for U Conn hoop for a period of time, where mysterious full rides magically appeared at a school with nowhere near an endowment that could fund even half a scholarship.....forgive me for not celebrating the purity and innocence of college athletics. U Conn has proven they are best in the "bizness"......big whoop.

I've lived in mass and nyc. i have relatives in ct and my wife commuted to work there for years.

So, my two cents is that, across the entire state (including beyond New Haven), sports fans in CT are probably 2--1 pro New York vs. pro New England.

On the other hand, CT has a lot of people, so even just 1 in 3 pro-New England would give it about as many New England Fans as each of ME and NH and about twice as many as VT, so it's all relative. But, your guess is as good as mine.

One exception does not a rule make. If you spend most of your days commuting to NYC from the southwestern edge of CT, chances are NY is your city. And that makes perfect sense.

There are other reasons Big Blue still has a lot of pull in CT - they were the only team in town until the 60s as well as the BS Kraft pulled with the stadium deal.

Only UConn fans feel happy about that deal in CT since it gave the team Rentschler Field.

And it's a sore topic because it's the first thing people talk about when CT is mentioned. It's the equivalent of hearing 18-1 every time somebody brings up the Pats.

Closer to 50-50 in my experience. And more more favorably distributed to Boston when you talk Red Sox vs Yankees

I have absolutely no idea what this post is about. Colleges accept students from all over America. But if you're saying UConn doesn't use Conn. talent, you'll have to explain that to all the players from Conn. who played at UConn, like Earl Kelley, Corny Thompson, Scotty Burrell, Chris Smith, Andre Drummond, etc. Out of state feeder school? I can't think of any players that followed each other from the same school. What school are you referring to?

Second time that the UCONN Men's and Women's basketball team has won the championship in the same year. Last time this has happen was in 2004. Hmmmm, who won the superbowl in 2004?;)

I have just seen people from Massachusetts drive before

I've always thought of Connecticut as schizophrenic. The closer to NYC, the more it's a suburb of the city. The farther away, the more it's like New England. I think of New Haven as the place where loyalties get mixed; north and west aligns more closely with New England; south aligns with New York.

The dividing line seems to be I-91 which runs from New Haven to Hartford. To the east tends to align with Boston, to the west NY. Heck a large portion of Western Ma, is Giant fans more so than Patriot fans which is why the Fox station out of Hartford chooses to show the Giants instead of the Pats when the pats have an NFC visitor at Gillette and the Giants play at the same time. Pisses me off to no end.

As for the whole Tri-State area thing - that is only referring to SW CT or Fairfield County being part of the NY-CT-NJ tri-state region.
