Another reason why the NFL's breast cancer awareness is BS

why would the ACS refuse money and exposure even if the donator has an ulterior motive.

Exactly. The ACS is in the business of funding cancer research. If a prominent organization comes to them with a partnership offer, they'd be silly to turn it down. If they were shrewd negotiators they would know that the NFL is using the 'pink' as a way to generate additional revenue while ALSO contributing to a charitable, and negotiate accordingly. Maybe 5% was all the ACS could squeeze out of the NFL for use of the logo. I don't know.

So, in the end, the NFL makes more apparel revenue (yay NFL!), and the ACS gets hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of dollars of cancer research money (yay ACS!).

Classic win-win.

EDIT: It seems like the only problem you have is that you don't get to decide what the NFL does with its money. I hope you realize how silly that is.

People use selling products to raise money for charities all the time. Look at all the Boston Strong shirts being sold. I wouldn't have purchased one if I didn't know how much was going to the charity (100%). I would've assumed that more than 5% of my money would go to ACS by purchasing any of the NFL's pink items but I'm not interested in buying that stuff and would rather donate straight to a cancer research charity.

Same thing goes for the NFL from the other side.
Look at it this way:
Lets say the NFL sells 1 billion of pink items.
They would be donating 50,000,000 to the ACS, of which about 34.2mill would be used for cancer research and 16.8 mill would cover their operating expenses.
The league (based upon the article estimate) would have spend 500,000,000 to manufacture the merchandise. Of course they have other expenses as well. A ROI of 30% is a standard guideline, although retail is usually less, so we will say, in this case the NFL ends up with 300,000,000 profit, less the 50,000,000 it gave to the ACS.

So here are the NFLs choices.
1) Do nothing and make 300,000,000 selling merch that isnt pink
2) Do 1 and give 50 mill any way.
3) Do what they did, and have the advantage of raising awareness plus get the goodwill of doing it
4) Your plan:Do 3, give 1,000,000 and sustain a 700,000,000 loss.

The percentage donated versus what could be donated in search of whether the operation is more gimmick than actual charity...

The percentage is lower than, say, the Yoplait lids campaign, but it's not unheard of, and this isn't a straight donation situation. It's cause-related marketing. While I would love for the NFL to cut back on the overkill during this drive of theirs, your final recourse is probably just going to have to be a decision not to purchase the products. Best of luck with your contacting them and the follow ups, though. Maybe you'll be able to make a positive difference.

If the NFL really thought it was so important they'd give 100% of the profits to breast cancer. Next your going to yell me that godfell personally takes 5% of the revenue as a bonus but that's OK cause as long as some money is raised...if eben one woman has a mammogram because of this spectacle blah blah.

Just got off the phone with the Pats proshop and they said it's written on the merchandise tag the amount given to Breast Cancer research, when I asked to check one of the tags I was told 15%.

Dallas Cowboys proshop had no clue, said "I have no clue"

Green bay proshop said the NFL has the numbers then said product was marked up and the mark up was given to Breast cancer research but wasn't sure.

Called the NFL they said 100% of the proceeds goes to Breast Cancer research,

Maybe it's safe to say 100% of the mark up(proceeds) goes to Breast Cancer research but who knows. After those phone calls I'd rather write a check to BCR....

I'm not interested in buying that stuff and would rather donate straight to a cancer research charity.
I would think that some percentage of people reached by the campaign think like you and do in fact directly donate, and that's one reason the ACS encourages it.

The ACS has a specific marketing program of its own aimed at getting companies to invoke the ACS name in cooperative marketing.

ACS Cause Marketing
