How to Catch a Football: 8 Steps - wikiHow

I am teaching 3rd graders to do it. I am sick of seeing nfl recievers letting the ball in on their body. Not catching with the hands lead to a number of drops yesterday. I have noticed this about Thompkins all year and its really frusttraing lack fo fundamentals. He lets everything into the body which is why he bobbles so many passes. I have also noticed this about Dobson although the one catch he had yesterday was all hands.

Go watch Dez Bryant that dude attacks the ball with his hands.

I can catch a football like a boss. When you drop a pass 99.9 percent of the time its because of lack of concentration.

Also, I never understood people that don't catch with their hands first.

We lead the league in drops its pretty pathetic. Tom wasnt great yesterday but this has got to stop. We got our @sses chewed in jv football for not ctahcing with our hands. Its plaguing us all year dont understand how you get to this level and think its ok to trap a catch on yor chest its infuriating.

No worries, TE Nate Solder is ready for duty.

Until I lace 'em up and step between the lines of an NFL Field on a Sunday afternoon, I think I'll leave the criticism of those who drop passes to those who actually play or coach at that level (with all respect to other posters' third grade and JV team experiences). We have no idea of how fast and how hard it is out there on game day.

I dropped one out in the yard the other day :(

I don't drink, but can I still post in this thread?

Just to clarify I am coaching young kids the fundamentals of football and I did play WR in college. Sure it wasnt big time D1 but I have been in enough practices as a coach and player to speak to the lack of fundamentals I see on a weekly basis from the Patriots WRs.

This has nothing to do with the NFL and everything to do with the basics principals every player is taught from a young age and practiced every day.

I will simplify:

Protip: Catch with your hands

Ian, can you make a hang-wringing forum area?

not that it's all rainbows and unicorns, but people really have to stop with bashing the team on every back play/series/game. Play enough football and we will have a bad game. You have to take the long view and find the good inside the bad.

We lost to a team that will be competing for post season. The offense played their worst game in recent memory and still had a chance to tie it in the end. The drops are awful, true, but why stoop down to a level and say they can't even get the basics right.

I'm fairly certain few 3rd graders could be running their (near) fastest pace and catch one of TBs throws, they'd probably get knocked over. Heck the JVs too. Granted they are professionals, but just be thankful you don't see this every season.

I know we take out football seriously (i mean we are in an online forum after all)...

/* throws his hands up and walks away muttering about spoiled fans */

I was watching the Cowboys/Broncos game yesterday and was amazed that the Boys have rookie receiver who can actually catch the ball. It was a sight to behold.

If you are going to drop the ball so much like Kenbrell Thompkins maybe he shouldn't be playing so much. I know I am not the only one :gossip2: but I would like to see Dopson Starting instead of Thompkins.:)

I thought the offensive line getting whipped and Brady's inability to be accurate when unable to step into throws were bigger issues.

If you want to see a demonstration of how to catch a football then go back to last week with the game against the Falcons and watch Tony Gonzalez.

There is a reason why Gonzalez has been a multiple pro bowler and future HOFer....he has perfect hand catching ability that I have only seen a few players have in this league right now and even in his late 30s he is the best in the business in showing proper technique.

We need guys like that here,I would love for Gonzalez one day to be our receivers coach.

Great point Gonzo catches everything with his hands and always has, he attacks the ball with his hands vs letting it in to his body. I think his basketball rebounding background had a huge influence.

Leading the league in drops isnt hand wringing its a bi product of poor play for the last 5 games. This could as easily have cost us more than just yesterdays game. This team is lucky to be 4-1. Our offense is built on being able to sustain drives and drops are a huge reason why we sputter where in years past we are able to advance the ball methodically down the field.

Playing the 3rd grader card. Ouch. :D
