Patriots release Brandon Lloyd

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

Belichick called him the smartest receiver he's ever coached, and Belichick's not one to compliment players on his roster.

Which is why it's stupid to use Randy Moss as an example for why we shouldn't be concerned other receivers can pick up the offense by week 1.

Moss was and is an emotional headcase, BB might have complimented him because he thought things would go better then if he hadn't complimented him.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

He caught 61% of his targets last season. From Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I've come to realize being productive on a bad team is meaningless and just because the QB isn't as good as Brady doesn't mean the receiver is automatically going to be better once he gets here. Lloyd had 1400 yards with Orton, Chad was a stud with Carson Palmer so I'm not expecting a huge jump in production because he's now playing with Tommy Boy.

Nothing against Jones I just don't expect a huge improvement because that theory has been debunked countless times.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

Thanks, needed a laugh.

I am not saying presently, but the guy led the NFL in receiving in 2010, and he averaged almost 19 yds per reception in doing so. I would say that qualified as one of the best deep threats in the NFL despite running a 4.6.

Moss was a headcase and he was lazy as hell when it came to some things but he was smart. He had the most freakish ability to detect where deep passes thrown to him were gonna end up. Brady would throw a pass completely off target and Moss would somehow anticipate it and adjust perfectly. His instincts and football IQ as a receiver were off the charts, he just had other problems like being a ***** who stayed away from the middle of the field and big hits.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

I think the team just needed more time to negotiate a deal with him and with the $3M roster bonus looming, they had to cut him to get that time.

Won't be surprised to see us resign him.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

A total retooling of this grouping. Guess I'm kind of getting my wish. I wanted Lloyd gone because a team with championship aspirations couldn't start a three down WR with zero after catch play making skills....and the small ball Welker-centric offense couldn't put up points the last game every year. Never thought they'd kick'em all to the curb though.

So you didn't like Lloyd because too little of his production was YAC, and you didn't like Welker because too much of his production was YAC?

I'm not saying he wasn't smart, I'm just saying that you don't want to put too much stock into BB's comment. Coaches like him say things not because of the inherent truth of the statement but because of the effect it'll have on the player.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

Welker, Talib situations.......

If your the maestro of any orchestra, it is one that can play only one note.

One has to wonder about the age of someone like Shmessy when he can't even spell "you're" right.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

I'm not surprised by this at all.

Charmin tissue soft receivers like Brandon Lloyd have no business being in the Patriots' offense. Especially since he offered zero YAC or big play ability. Despite his overly inflated numbers, Lloyd was actually a liability as a starter and it became even more apparent in the playoffs against a championship caliber defense.

If he comes back at a reduced price his role should be as a #3/4 WR down the depth chart utilized only on 3rd down sideline routes. He's nothing more that Branch-esque JAG at this point.

The Patriots can (and will) do better.

Lloyd had 1 great year out of 11. Johnson was a good WR who was done by the time he arrived here and we took a chance to revive him.

This kid Jones is 25 with a very low contract and could either become very good or just wash out in camp. TBD

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

What a let down hearing this news. We are so WR needy and we let a decent talent like this get away? He won't last long on the market. Probably talking to the Jets as we speak.

He does that and he'll probably be out of the league by this time next year. There are plenty of other NFL teams he could collect a paycheck from without doing the kind of career damage a Jets stint would do.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

Moss' route was to go out. He didn't read defenses, his job was to beat the guy or guys that were covering him.

Did a damn great job of doing it. But let's not kid ourselves that Moss was this thinking man WR.

Both TFB said Moss was the smartest player he's ever player with.

BB has also commented on his high Football IQ.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

Some comments on the comments

1. People who want to dismiss Lloyd's production are just foolish. Only 27 other receivers had more production, and that's with him usually being the 3rd option

2. For a guy considered to be soft, he somehow managed to remain healthy all season. Something the rest of or receiving corps had a hard time doing. He took a number of hard hits making tough catches

3. The Pats didn't have any other receiver, including Wes, who made more catch on less than perfect passes.

4. Lloyd has NEVER been a "deep threat" He did EXACTLY what the Pats brought him in to do, which was make catch outside the numbers in the mid range era. THAT's what he did as the large number of catches for first downs proved (54 IIRC)

5. All that being said, I have no problem with what the Pats did. I fully expect him to be back before the draft

6. Lloyd's biggest failure in my mind wasn't the YAC issue, but that he never got in synch with Brady on those back shoulder passes. If he returns I'd love to see he and Brady get batter at that.

7. Clearly the Pats have more work to do at the WR postiton. IF we assume the Pats are going to get Sanders along with Jones, they are an interesting combination. Both seem to be receivers that are unproven, but on the verge of becoming capable starters, and certainly legitimate. But like the rest of the moves the Pats have made to the WR group this off season they are both have risk and question marks that won't be answered until real games are being played.

8. I'm hoping Edelman will be back, but that being said, I'm STILL looking for that BIG physical WR. If I were to sign a former Buffalo WR it would have been David Nelson. But while I have to acknowledge that Jones isn't "big" at 6' and 205 his isn't one of the usual Pats midget WR

9. Hard not to get excited about the progress so far. Getting Talib, adding AWilson, and possible Abraham makes for a real good start to FA. Now get me Volmer and Edelman and I can comfortably wait for the plan B FA's who will be added from April thru July.

10. MG - Hope you get through this rant and calm down. You are starting to sound like me immediately after a draft pick I didn't get. ;)

11. Borgie, take it easy brother, it will all be good. You will see.

BTW- I'd be interested in seeing where the Pats are now with the cap. Given all the deals, and all the "could be deals" its hard to figure out.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

4. Lloyd has NEVER been a "deep threat"
Lloyd's best deep threat year is just as good as Mike Wallace's best deep threat year (both 2010), when Lloyd had 16 receptions over 20 yards (in the air) down the field, including a ridiculous six over 40 yards down the field.

For comparison, Brady didn't complete a single pass over 40 yards this past season. Two years ago, Lloyd had six in one season

Every time Lloyd was handed a paycheck, he cradled it and fell to the floor.

This was a major problem all year.

Re: Patriots will release Brandon Lloyd

Help me out on this inference. On the Welker front, I love the guy and think he's the best there is at his position. The problem is the team's reliance on the small ball package. The Baltimore game confirmed every belief I had on NE's offensive limitations. Baltimore's nickel bottled up the WRs. With Lloyd dropping to the ground on every catch and diminutive WW as the team's lone deep threat, is it any wonder Pollard moved closer and closer to the LOS as the game progressed and inflicted severe punishment in the second half. The offense turned one dimensional....play action was abandoned and shot gun dominated. The result...38% of NE offensive plays went for zero yards or fewer. Losing Gronk hurt no doubt, but the plan B was inept with only 2 real WRs on the roster and zero deep threats.
I feel bad for WW. He deserves more coin than those under performing outside WRs that make double his current wage. He deserves more financial respect in the NFL....but I'm happy NE is going in a new direction
And the Talib situation????....good player who gets hurt. That's about all I have ever written on the subject. 1 year/$5 mill is perfect and a huge win for BB.

Preach brother preach.

Let me remind Patriots fans once again: Gronk was hurt in the playoffs. Any admiration of Baltimore bottling the Patriots up should consider how the Patriots moved the ball with Gronk both in the first half last year in the playoffs and in week 1 this year. Gronk and Welker were the two big targets When Gronk went down, the offense was bottled up. Whatever the Patriots were doing with "small ball" during the regular season was working, very well I might add. It would have worked against the Ravens as well if Gronk was in there.

Brandon Lloyd was not designated a June 1 release which means that his dead money hit of $2 million hits the 2013 Patriots cap.
