Nick Collins about to be released

I'm less concerned with his age than I am with his fused neck.

Are the Packers releasing him due to Salary Cap issues or due to health. Obiviouslt for a Safety a neck injury is very serious. His health should be paramount.

That's what physicals are for. Obviously if his body can't hold up then forget about him, but if he's close to healthy he'd be a nice addition.

The guy can play. As others have said though, has he been released because of his injury ?

Yes, that is the one and only reason the Packers are releasing their Pro Bowl safety. They fear for his health if he continues to play with fused vertebrae. They want him to retire healthy and in one piece.

His salary has nothing to do with it. He'd be due to get paid about 4 million next year.

His health can't be more precarious than Landry's. Might as well see if he's interested in an incentive laden deal.

Umm...weren't there stories before his release questioning whether or not he is even capable of playing?

And McCarthy said something like that if Collins was his son he would not let him play.

I'm guessing this guy is done.

My conscience would prevent me from ever putting a guy like that out on a football field again.

Uh yea the more I think about it maybe it's not such a great idea.

The guy can't play and/or shouldn't play. He was a hell of a player pre-injury, but there's no way in hell he would have been released in the first place pre-injury. I'd hope that the Pats aren't wasting any time kicking the tires on this guy.

McCarthy begged him to retire.

The guy should count his blessings and move on.

How does this compare to Peyton Manning's neck injury?

Collins uses his neck to tackle people. Manning just uses his neck to keep his big head from falling over.

Surely holding up a head the size of Manning's would be harder on the neck than having to make tackles? :p

In all seriousness though, he should only ever play again if it isn't going to make his life significantly worse once he retires.

I see Chad Clifton was also released. Apparently failed a physical but theres some stuff going around that the cap space might be a bigger reason. If he can get himself in shape he might not be a bad pickup on the cheap as cover, hell he might even start if he was in shape.

Clifton did fail a physical, but he was mostly released for cap space.

Ask Peyton M. of how dangerous neck injuries are and the riskes you take.

Nick could be one blinded hit away from being paralyzed ..... I think he should do a Mike Wright and retire in decent condition while he still can.

Every player is one blinded hit away.

If he wants to play again and can pass his physicals then I would be happy to have him. He was one of the top 5 safties in the league a few years ago. He is still fairly young and if doctors clear him to play who am I to think he shouldn't.

I think people hear certain body parts and automatically assume it should be over. That obviously is not always the case. In this instance it sounds like Nick might have a more serious injury but even still there are average joes doing jobs with injuries and maybe putting themselves at equal/less/or more risk and usually for much much less money.

Sure he has likely made a lot of money in his career but he might be counting on that one last pay day to set him up for retirement or maybe his retirement is all set but he hasnt fully funded the college fund or something.
