Yeah, the time for settlement has come and gone. You can thank the NFL insisting on Brady "accepting the Wells/Pash report", for that.
The time for settlement passed weeks ago.
When Goodell decided Brady was actually more guilty (the phone! THE PHONE!!) than previously thought and more deserving of his the punishment, an amicable resolution was gone! Period! End of story!
Both men had to fight it at this point, however, that was MUCH more especially true for Goodell. Has anyone asked why the NFL didn't counter offer Brady's arbitration hearing settlement offer? Hell, why wouldn't Goodell say "ok Tom, you offered no games, we'll offer 3 games". What did he have to lose?? Would anyone have said "you're letting Brady off!!" with still an epic 3 game punishment? Not really. Goodell didn't counter offer because he is 'all in' from a business perspective. He's lied, twisted, cajoled, fooled to show he is the F-BMOC! Didn't matter if he came across dishonest and dishonorable, being the F-BMOC had WAY bigger business capital. Opponents would tremble at the sound of his F-BMOC footsteps.
But this far into it, now, he is going to be Roger Goodell, dishonest and hishonorable leader of the premier 10+ billion sports league that looked over the evidence twice, gave the same ruling twice, let his name get sullied, put millions of dollars into it, to say "ok, let's go with 1 game Tom. You're a fine young man. Let's move on"??? Folks, something Paul Castellano did then went and had dinner at Spark's Steak House.
If Goodell shows he is folding he will put himself in business jeopardy. The F-BMOC of the NFL is a 40+ million salary, international name recognition, leader of the most exclusive club on the planet. Trust me when I tell you there is a Gotti(s) lurking about that wants that salary, that recognition, that F-BMOC title of the most exclusive club on the planet. You simply do not get to this level without keeping both eyes open to those near and far of you. Way too much money and prestige at stake to not always suspect others want it and will take it from you the first time you stumble/show weakness.
The mediation is window dressing. It's a farce. The only way Goodell was going to settle is if he felt he was in real trouble. His insulated bubble he lives in is unlikely to feel in trouble this easy.
