Yeah, the time for settlement has come and gone. You can thank the NFL insisting on Brady "accepting the Wells/Pash report", for that.

The time for settlement passed weeks ago.
When Goodell decided Brady was actually more guilty (the phone! THE PHONE!!) than previously thought and more deserving of his the punishment, an amicable resolution was gone! Period! End of story!

Both men had to fight it at this point, however, that was MUCH more especially true for Goodell. Has anyone asked why the NFL didn't counter offer Brady's arbitration hearing settlement offer? Hell, why wouldn't Goodell say "ok Tom, you offered no games, we'll offer 3 games". What did he have to lose?? Would anyone have said "you're letting Brady off!!" with still an epic 3 game punishment? Not really. Goodell didn't counter offer because he is 'all in' from a business perspective. He's lied, twisted, cajoled, fooled to show he is the F-BMOC! Didn't matter if he came across dishonest and dishonorable, being the F-BMOC had WAY bigger business capital. Opponents would tremble at the sound of his F-BMOC footsteps.
But this far into it, now, he is going to be Roger Goodell, dishonest and hishonorable leader of the premier 10+ billion sports league that looked over the evidence twice, gave the same ruling twice, let his name get sullied, put millions of dollars into it, to say "ok, let's go with 1 game Tom. You're a fine young man. Let's move on"??? Folks, something Paul Castellano did then went and had dinner at Spark's Steak House.
If Goodell shows he is folding he will put himself in business jeopardy. The F-BMOC of the NFL is a 40+ million salary, international name recognition, leader of the most exclusive club on the planet. Trust me when I tell you there is a Gotti(s) lurking about that wants that salary, that recognition, that F-BMOC title of the most exclusive club on the planet. You simply do not get to this level without keeping both eyes open to those near and far of you. Way too much money and prestige at stake to not always suspect others want it and will take it from you the first time you stumble/show weakness.

The mediation is window dressing. It's a farce. The only way Goodell was going to settle is if he felt he was in real trouble. His insulated bubble he lives in is unlikely to feel in trouble this easy.

Get 'em, Shaka Tommy!!!

This is disgusting. I don't remember Peterson or Rice being treated like this. Did Brady kill somebody?

The NFL has been equally aggressive on Peterson. They are currently in court for simply refusing to abide by the court's ruling. That's a step beyond even where they've gone here.

The only thing making Peterson less of a scandal is that they didn't have to fake or lie about or leak anything, since Peterson actually did what he's accused of.

If Goodell is cited for contempt by Doty later this month, would that have any influence on his standing with Berman?

I can't imagine that it would help, though legally I don't think that it should have any effect? I'm no expert, so I can't say with any real confidence.

This. Goodell actually just rescheduled a Contempt of Court hearing in Minnesota that was originally set for the day after the Brady hearing.

An "insulated bubble." That is so very perceptive.

Someone on this board who is smarter than me once said that he thought Goodell was a "True Believer."
I think he was right: Goodell is a True Believer. He actually believes the **** he is shoveling. He actually believes he is "defending the shield" and protecting "the integrity of the game." He can blind himself to what normal human beings would consider truth or reality in pursuit of his agenda because he believes he is right.

The line between "True Believers" and Saints is as thin as is the line between "True Believers" and Demons.

In my opinion, Goodell has strayed into the realm of the demonic.

So, this is why your comment is so perceptive: one characteristic of all True Believers is that they live in bubbles. True Believers can't see anything other than what they feel is the righteousness of their cause.

Sometimes, True Believers prevail, we should never forget that. But more often than not, they go down in flames, either singing Hymns or cursing the Darkness.
