Sign the Beast XLV: Pats targeting WR Stevie Johnson? [3/17 update: signs w/ Chargers]

Be careful about those Bills stats. Someone on bad teams has to catch the ball. The other options on those teams were David Nelson, Scott Chandler, Donald Jones, Roscoe Parrish and an over the hill Lee Evans. All very mediocre NFL players. Not saying much that Johnson was the best of that lot and got the most targets and receptions. Put him in San Fran, where is clearly not as good as Crabtree or Boldin, and no surprise that he is only a third option, with a commensurate reduction in targets and receptions.

No, no one has to catch the ball.

not sure how stevie fits in without an injury somewhere. Lafell, Danny, Jules, Stevie?..Someone is not going to see much time if all healthy.

edit, Dobson?.Tyms?..

Buy low, sell high. A lot of different personalities makes for good chemistry. Having said that, he'll have to rein it in here. Aqib Talib and Blount are recent examples of bad actors who loved the atmosphere here. A lot of these guys missed father figures and welcome the discipline and family atmosphere.

Having said that, if he's a jerk, see ya later. A couple nowhere years can sober someone up if they're just immature.

Stevie could be high as our WR2 and most likely WR3, so he'd see a lot of snaps.

If he takes less to play for a top caliber team, yes. He would be motivated.
He can stretch the field (vertical).

Stevie-Julian-Brandon-Amendola WRs
Chandler-Gronk TEs

As for Dobson, not sure if he can stay healthy for the season...

then why keep DA?

I'm honestly not sure about that as well. I'm glad Amendola restructured, but why are we in the hunt for a mid-tier WR (Harvin, Hartline, A. Johnson, S. Johnson) when we have three signed for 3+ million a year already?

The WR3 sees a lot of playing time in our offense, so upgrading it would help the team, but I'm not sure how many snaps Amendola would see as a WR4.

Probably some WRs will get cut during training camp and after pre-season games...
Get some WRs competition...

Be great if we could add some Bush as well as a big ole Johnson to this offense. As long as there is adequate protection, only good things will come about.

On a serious note, adding these two would about round out the skill positions, unless they wanted to try and draft an upgrade to Bluount as the primary ballcarrier. But I think these two additions plus Mathis on the interior OL and it'd be a scary offense, without really breaking the bank for any one partiular player.

Curran indicated that Patriots have moved on in acquiring Mathis...

Whether this is true or not, Patriots need a top-caliber OG to protect Brady even more. Jets HC scheme is man-coverage and more blitzes.. Bills have added to their DL. Miami has Suh.

Spring fever Patsy?

Yes but I don't see him looking to be a 4th Wr or #5th or #6th option in an offense

He wouldn't be that low...But Dobson tyms ect will be that low if someone like him or bowe comes here

In terms of being an option in the offense, at a minimum he is behind Gronk, JE and LaFell. He'll compete for targets with 3rd down back, Amendola and Chandler. If Dobson emerges all bets are off.

In terms of where he sits on the WR depth chart he is behind JE and LaFell. He has more talent than Amendola but if Dobson is better than his rookie year he is #4. If that endsup being the case, because Amendola backs up JE and also plays STs, Johnson becomes a luxury. Now hes battling for #5.

Tom Brady throwing to 8-10 guys each game = success and neutralizes guys like Mevis. Rewatch super bowl please. 37 completions.

Lot's of qbs, including brady can throw long.and it's always risky.

No one can throw safe, high percentage passes to multiple receivers and march the length of the field over and over like Brady.

Quick smurfs and tight ends means an offense no one can match and no one can stop if Tom's on. Negates pass rush, and prevents interceptions and forces the D to play the short zone.

Honestly, I'm also getting into the "enough with the wide receivers" camp. 6 million? Five million?

I haven't given up on Dobson, by any means (losing faith in Boyce and have never really had any great hopes for Tyms). I'd rather go with what we have and see if Dobson can climb to that next level. If not, at the trading deadline, a lot of these one-year prove-it guys will be on teams going nowhere, so snatch one up.

If you don't let your own guys play, you'll never know if they were worth the pick. A couple of years ago, Denver had two mediocre receivers going into their 3rd year.

We've got around 12m, not counting Chandler and countering payroll moves to Chandler. OL, DL, CB 3rd-down back...

Otherwise, if someone's a steal - a Harvin for 3 million, then sure. Otherwise, make DA earn that money you're paying him and give Dobson a chance to shine.

No, no one has to catch the ball.

Um, yes they do. Do you remember Reche Caldwell? In 2006, when he was surrounded by players that, like him, didn't belong in the NFL, he was targeted 102 times for 61 receptions and 760 yards. A year later he was out of the league. Besides 2006, his career highs were 43 targets and 28 catches, and 352 yards. He was not a better receiver in 2006, he was just surrounded by comparably even lesser talents. So it was with Stevie Johnson in Buffalo.

That doesn't explain how he pretty much owns Revis and those games were when Revis was at his absolute prime.
