A second round pick insures it all stays for a very long time. It does the opposite of making it go away.

Good point. What I should have said was "Anything but a year suspension for BB." I'd be devastated.

Understanding that this wasn't directed at me, and that you have a fine point about accepting truth when all we have is rumors, but the Jay Glazer example isn't your best choice.

Out of any of the mediots, Glazer at least sticks to his "3 separate sources" rule, which has never once given him a problem or an incorrect break on a story. Even though I think he's a douche, I do respect the fact that he attempts to wait until he has a confirmation from 3 separate sources, which is more than most.
Remember the POS leaked the confidential tape to him. His source is likely Kraft's good buddy, the POS.

It would really be a disgrace if we lose a 2nd round pick over THIS. Such a minor infraction. Minnesota and Carolina get a slap on the wrist memo saying don't heat up footballs again after blatantly doing it on camera (rumor has it, that it was Patriot's camera that caught this, I kid, I kid). Yet the Pats don't even get a courtesy warning saying "hey don't do that again". Nope, they just get a 2 round pick taken away because the NFL felt like they needed to prove a point against ONE and only ONE TEAM, by using entrapment. And entrapment is exactly what they did if the Colts warned the NFL about deflated footballs back in November and Baltimore warned them last week. Pats should have gotten a warning in November.

Just like Spygate and the 1st round pick and $500,000 from BB. The haters bring up, "well if it didn't give the Patriots an advantage, why did the League take the first round pick and give the largest fine in NFL history to a head coach?"
That's only if you give a crap what the haters say. Which I don't.

Anyone who feels that this incident "taints" the NFL or the Pats or the sanctity of the game is straight up delusional with what football is about and has been about. That "legacy" (the "good old days" that people like to conjure up whenever new rules are implemented to take big hits out of the game) were the same "good old days" where cheating and gamesmanship were the name of the game.

The Raiders, as much as we might roll our eyes at their Tuck Rule silliness, are undoubtedly a critical part of NFL history and lore. They also used to have a sign in their locker room which said "Rule #1 - Cheating is encouraged. Rule #2 - See Rule #1". Fred Biletnikoff was notorious for using so much stick'um on his hands that teammates would refuse to hi-five or shake his hand in-game or post-game.

How about the 49ers? We remember "The Catch" and Montana's heroics. Do we really remember (or care about) their salary cap shenanigans? Or that they were infamous for illegal leg whips?

Or the Giants and Bill Parcells who used all sorts of "home cooking" to gain an edge - including having someone open up the door at the windy end of the stadium when the opposing team was attempting a FG.

Or the Cowboys. You know the team whose head coach (Jimmy Johnson) would rummage through his opponents trash to try to find any notes or hints of a gameplan.

Or all of the players in the 70's and 80's who used pine tar, stick'um, soaked their jerseys in non-stick cooking spray, taped metal rods into their wrist guards (to stun opposing linemen), created fake casts made out of concrete-type substances and - yes - used deflated balls.

Where is this idea that football is a noble game where no corners are ever cut, no edges ever sought come from? Football, like every sport, is full of ultra-competitive people. You don't make it to the highest level without trying everything you can to one-up your opponent. From stealing signs, to doctoring balls, altering fields, piping in noise, turning the heat up in a domed stadium, having radio communication mysteriously go out, doctoring your jersey, taking drugs (steroids, greenies, Adderall, HGH whatever), twisting guys' ankles or knees in pileups, etc - it's a part of the game.

People want to stop following the Patriots because some balls were deflated? Are you under the impression that the Patriots, and evil ol' Bill Belichick, are the only team which are doctoring balls? That other teams aren't doing similar things? Even after Brad Johnson says he paid some guys to doctor balls? After all the myriad reports of QB's and (some) coaches dismissing this as a pretty normal part of the game? When has there ever been an era of football without cheating? You think the Patriots of the early 2000's weren't using performance boosting drugs or trying "home cooking" on their field/stadium? You think there weren't guys jacked on 'roids just because they weren't caught? Are you under the impression that the 70's, 80's, 90's - hell ANY classic moment in ANY classic football game didn't involve guys and teams which were cheating somehow?

The only reason this is worth any discussion is because Roger Goodell is an ego-manaical power-hungry wannabe dictator who applies rules and punishment with no semblance of consistency or logic. He does whatever he thinks will satisfy the masses and if that fails, he will hire some former athletes and their wives to sigh, in a very forlorn manner, at a camera #NoMore. Were it not for Goodell being a reckless and incompetent buffoon who very well might suspend Belichick for the Super Bowl, this entire thing would be (and should be) viewed as a hilarious waste of time by anyone with a semblance of understanding as the game's history and the nature of football (and any professional sport).
Spot on mcmurtry86.

What happened to running, blocking and tackling? Now the biggest issues are things like ball pressure, camera placement, choice of footwear, post game handshakes and media availablity?

Maybe we should just change the name "football" and swap it out for "synchronized swimming".

WTF is happening to our sport? It went from a "man's game" to an international embarressment. SMFH. Seriously.

So many stupid rumors floating about.. can we get someone to get one out where the Colts ball boy sneaks over to the Pats sideline and deflates the balls?

Shocked to read Jackie MacMullen already convicting BB and calling for a suspension, essentially.

From everything I've read and learned in the last couple of days, if the Pats deflated the balls, the guy at fault here is likely Brady's handler/manager, and BB probably didn't even know.

We still don't know that though, as the report hasn't been released.

The NFL may have, behind closed doors, warned Belichick and the Pats about not messing with the game balls, and for the second time, Belichick MAY have ignored the memo and continued to push the envelope.

It that's the case, punishment is warranted. I certainly hope not though.

And the answer shall remain the same: "Because Herr Commissioner is a startlingly incompetent moron who has no either to a handle a controversy and can only underpenalize or overpenalize."

So let me see if I understand correctly:

Aaron Rogers routinely has his footballs examined by the referees, where in some cases they pass muster, and in other cases they don't (and are then deflated to meet spec). Furthermore, Aaron feels comfortable discussing this in the media, even stating his support for no maximum limit being placed on the pressure.

No penalty for the Packers.

The Patriots evidently (repeat, evidently) may have used under-inflated footballs in past games...which was brought to the attention of the NFL office by one or more Teams...yet they were allowed to implicate themselves...with no prior warning whatsoever from the NFL (I'm assuming)...or no special action taken by the NFL (such as retaining custody of the balls throughout the actual conduct of such a high profile game)??

Seems to me the NFL also has some culpability here, which would put in question the forfeiture of a high draft choice. But I'd still have to admit that the Patriots should receive some punishment, if it can be proved they altered the balls while in their custody - i.e. during the first half of the game. Such an action cannot be explained away, even with the lack of a competitive advantage argument.

Key question: since we've established the possibility that other Teams had already alerted the NFL about this matter, did the NFL, in turn, warn the Patriots against such conduct? If so, you could understand why NFL leadership would be pretty mad.

Agree, the penalty should,be,no different. The Krafts should fight anything more. The league should acknowledge the teams that have had the issue and change the rules to keep it from being an issue again.

I came to this thread to highlight, as Joey mentioned 10 or so pages ago, that the Nfl.com website has nothing related to this nonsense other than a story about Vikings coach Zimmer saying it wasn't a big deal and Browner saying it wasn't a big deal.

Not saying what the implications are but it's clear the NFL is at least portraying this via its website as a non-issue until the investigation is resolved.

I can't believe how crazy this thread has gotten. It's gone from reports on the findings from ONE source that ultimately are still inconclusive to conflicting reports that can't all be true to taking it as a given that BB signed off on it all.

I don't blame anyone for their reactions either: I know they come from a place of passion for the team and we as a fanbase have been royalty violated by the media and their utter childishness the past few days. I just think this is so clearly overblown that there is no point worrying about it until we get actual information, and regardless of the outcome I'm going to enjoy the sh*t out of this Super Bowl run.

'Cause there's only one 'um and that's f#@k 'um, right?

She's not a big Belichick fan. I remember in 06 when she ranted against him for pushing a camera guy (her friend) out of the way after the post season Jets game. So meh to her opinion.

If Lande is the only guy claiming the Pats are losing a second round pick, then let's wait to hear it from somebody else. The NFL experience is there, but I know I'm not the only person who questions the mental capacities that the guy has left.

27. New England Patriots (from New Orleans). Luke Kuechly*, LB, Boston College
The Patriots must upgrade their pass rush, and Kuechly is a versatile, athletic linebacker who can pressure quarterbacks.
