Also, listening to Harbaugh trying to explain the 4 OL is hilarious. Either he's an idiot, or he thinks his players are, because he looked like his brain was going to explode explaining something absurdly simple to a bunch of grown men. It's not hard: 5-1 = 4. I'm guessing he's not going to be splitting the atom anytime soon.

Not liking the thought of Vinovich reffing the SB.

He sure showed obvious favoritism towards BAL, as he totally ignored Brady and agreed with Suggs that Tom's a drama queen looking for a flop/flag.

What is he supposed to do ?

I doubt he or any of the other refs saw how Jernigan poked Brady's eye and given what was going on around them at that time I honestly can't blame them too hard on that. If it is subtle enough for all tv crews to miss it, how can you fault a referee who only has full speed and one angle available. To them it simply looked like some pushing and shoving after a failed third down.

I thought he called a game that was definitely not perfect but at least consistent. Holding on the pass rushers was not called on both teams. The Revis PI call was questionable, but then they missed his hold on Smith in the endzone in the fourth quarter. The reversed Amendola catch in Q1 which to me was not 100% evident in the replay is the only other thing I can think of.

Given people like Boger, Steratore or Hochuli I can very much live with Vinovich as SB ref.

My guess is that he was just appeasing them with a "yeah, I know, I know" that he says to EVERY player lobbying for calls.

I love how late in the game you hear the Ravens' defenders saying "Are we trying to go throw for throw with Brady???!!"

Yeah, they believe Joe Flacco is the best quarterback in the NFL all right. ;)

I think he's one of the best.

It's pretty clear that Vinovich was going well out of his way to help Baltimore figure things out. During the game he was telling the Ravens that Vereen was ineligable AND that they didn't have to cover him.

I could have used a translator to understand what some of the Ravens were saying.

I was very thankful that the video didn't include the snippet from the game where we got to see Suggs picking something out of the deepest caverns of his gigantic pie hole.

I hope Brady goes right up to Vinovich and asks him "Have you seen videos after the game with my red eye?"

When you factor in he goes into the Ravens huddle and essentially tells them to calm down after Suggs has done whining pretty much confirms that too.

Good refereeing, diffusing a problem before it turned into anything major - he knew the Ravens were getting chippy so he went and told them. There weren't many/any problems after that point.

Great video.

I think this was an important game in the career of...Joe Flacco. Not kidding. If Peyton is done/Denver implodes, there is no doubt in my mind that the Ravens/Pats rivalry will be top ticket the next couple of years.

Maybe. That seems like a very positive spin on it.
It seems to me to be more like he was a coach on the field for them, telling them who not to cover, and having a dialogue with them about their behavior and the behavior of their opponent.
Telling them to calm down is one thing. Listening to them intently, like he's their therapist or priest, and then offering calming reassurance, is another.

It just seems to be Vinovich's style of officiating the game, Edelman brings up the 4 OL plays to him at one point and how they're giving him his moneys worth from it and his reaction is pretty much "boy don't I know it!" (it came after the Harbaugh flag). Vid with Edelman's comment: http://www.nfl.com/videos/new-engla.../Inside-the-NFL-Ravens-vs-Patriots-highlights

So I don't think there was an ulterior motive behind it, he's just a "players ref".

Nice pick-up. I missed that. Thanks.
I found it interesting the respect for Brady that comes out throughout. At one point shortly after they have taken their first lead, Suggs, of all people, says "we can't let up...not with this guy."
So much of the trash talk to the media is just that, "trash talk." As players, they know who Brady is.

Thanks for the original post. Very interesting seeing clips from the other team's point of view. One thing I got from the Suggs clips was his LACK of trash talk. Maybe they didn't include that, but based on what was shown he was pretty much all business. The advice he was preaching to his teammates all game was all on point. Focus, focus, focus.

I can understand how Vuchavich missed the poke in the eye. I still don't understand the turnover of DA's catch early in the game, The overturning of the Vareen fumble was an easy one. So easy. I was surprised it was ruled a fumble in the first place. In the end the number of penalties and yards were about equal. Maybe the bad timing of all the calls against the Pats was just a coincidence. In the end I guess it could be worse. It was probably going to be Steratore, but he got bumped because of the controversial call, even if it was the right call.

BTW- I wonder if Vuckavich will come with the same crew to the superbowl or will it be another "all Star" group with new people to work with.

disagree.

i think that's his way of keeping control of things. "words are cheap." i have little doubt that he talks to both teams that way. if he can calm things down without doing anything to give either team a competitive advantage, what's the problem?

the bottom line is that no one has said that he gave the Ravens "too much" time to get ready and the consensus seems to be that the seven to ten seconds the D had after the "ineligible" announcements was appropriate...he wasn't waiting until the Ravens gave him "permission" to start the play nor was he standing by if Brady tried to get the snap off in two seconds.

the real bottom line is that Harbaugh was outcoached on the sidelines and the Ravens' D was outsmarted on the field for three straight plays. you can hear them trying to understand it after the fact talking on the bench. as Jimmy Johnson, Boomer Esiason and many others pointed out after the game, Harbaugh should have called a time out as soon as he saw the formation. that's why he gets the big bucks...for moments like that.

I came out from watching that and actually have more respect for Suggs, his feel for the game is superb, however I don't think he actually understood what the issue was with the 4OL though, I still think he may be confused even now, he looked clueless when Ngata was trying to explain why Harbough was penalized.
His No fear No fear was to his team and he actually said, "This is not the time for fear". He knows us very well.
He predicted that they need one more hit on Brady to start take Brady off the same page with this receivers, luckily they did not get a chance for that to occur. Having Lewis, Reedy, Suggs in the same team must have been nice for tough moments.
he actually comes across as a pretty calm and level-headed player, trying to get his players organized, lobbying the refs, and keeping his players out of trouble during the scuffle.

e.g., around the 7:20 mark when he's tackling bolden and then solder pushes him to the ground from behind. instead of getting pissed off like a lot of other players would, suggs turns to solder and says, "was that necessary?" i kind of chuckled at the incongruity of his reaction.

Thank you for this link! After watching the perspective of the Ravens before, I wish it had been more Pats talk, less Suggs, but this was still a great watch. Edelman is a nut, LOVE that guy.

Yes, incongruent and scary for me in the sense that I thought he was a short fuse type of guy. He may be more level headed than I give him credit for. Solder at different points grabbed his face mask and I did not even here him complain. To him, it is part of the game.

Is it me or does it seem like the Ravens defenders (Suggs in particular) realized what was happening on the "ineligible" play way before Harbaugh?

Yeah he's an idiot.

Brady: "He just poked me in the face."
Suggs: "Nobody punched him, ref."

Suggs: "We're a very disciplined team. One of the less penalized teams."

9th most defensive penalties in the regular season, 2nd most in the playoffs

They ARE a disciplined team.

They've been disciplined by the league more than any other.
