Is Patriots Football Weekly a good magazine??

I've subscribed for years and have enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, lately they seem to have gone off on an attempt to be "neutral" analysts. If I wanted a neutral analyst mag, I'd subscribe to ESPN the Magazine. I'm a Pats fan and want a Pats fan newspaper.

I think they are losing subscribers and can't understand why. HINT if PFW guys are reading this: It is because you don'tknow your target audience (Pats fans) and are not writing to them.

When Casale showed up it was the last straw for me. Alas, I renewed for three years before he arrived, so I'm stuck with the mag for a bit longer. Then I will no longer subscribe.

Too bad, it used to be a good newspaper.

On the PFW radio show Casale has been going off on Ben Watson because he only left his girlfriend at 17.4% tip. Apparently if he was a normal tipper he would have given 30%. I like the guy, but this is among his lamer moments.

Disagree. Pro athletes should tip better. He's not saying anything about Watson as a player or anything. People treat Patriots players like they're your mommy and that any criticism is mean to mommy.

What's the story about Watson and tipping?

That's horse ****. I don't think anybody should simply tip because they have the money, let alone pro athletes. If the service isn't worth a 30% tip don't give a 30% tip, it's that simple. Doesn't matter if the waitress is Tom Casale's fiance, or my sister. Nor does it matter if it is Ben Watson, Tom Brady, Paul Pierce or Joe next door. If the waitress sucks, she doesn't even deserve 17.4%.

I buy it at the local store. There is a section that is part of my pre-game ritual so I'm afraid not to get it- could be bad luck.

I guess you're right, but would you mind sharing with us your inside information regarding Ben Watson's finances, you know family members and friends he's supporting, charitable contributions, education savings, retirement planning, investment return rate, etcetera, because I'm a bit confused as to how you have any frickin' clue how much disposable income he has relative to a non-"Pro athlete".

See post # 15 as written by Patsfanken - it details the fact that after Watosn gives much of himself by going overseas as he did - all that jerko Casale can focus in on his radio show was that he "only" tipped 17% or so AFTER getting a lousy meal and lousy service.

Thanks. So Casale is *****ing that Watson had to return a meal but still gave a 17% tip? LOL. Over here 15% is generous for a perfectly fine meal.

Well, I have been subscribing for the past few years, I certainly enjoy it.

During the season it arrives later then I would like, usually around Friday/Saturday before the game, but it is a good read and it helps breakdown the upcoming match-ups.

Really it is great in off-season in trying to keep track of the draft and free-agency. It is once a month at that point, but gives you something to knaw on a bit until training camp opens.

It is pretty even handed, does not put anyone in the organization or leauge onto a pedastle. It is good reporting on all things Patriots, not a lot of bias, so overcompensation to make sure they are not swinging to far towards company line. Certainly independent of football operations, so you are not getting any sort of propoganda.

The off-topic social type things (Watson tipping, Cory Dillon, this site) that is more of thier Internet radio and podcast stuff. It does not make its way into the paper at all. I think all of them do a good job of keeping personal likes or dislikes out of thier reporting.

Being a long time subscriber and local as well you do get alot of old news but alot of it is a good read even if you've heard it before. I don't think it's that expensive and you do get a free Patriot yearbook every year.

A little of topic but this needs to be said:

That radio show PFW in progress is starting to get on my nerves! Every week Tom and Andy spend half of the show trying to get people to send them food! How pathetic is that?!?! On top of that if they disagree with an email they spend another 5-10 minutes trashing them out! Very unprofessional. I think Fred (the boss) needs to get the show under control and on focus of Patriots football, not spending so much time on begging for food....

Well said!

Casale has bugged me for a long time. Everything he says is fact and everyone else on the show is scared of him that they back him on every ridiculous statement he makes.

When he realized he had no solid argument about the tipping story, he says (not word for word) "It's just a joke you douche bag! You should be embarrased! Its football, we're trying to have fun here!" and it was funny because you could practically see his blood pressure rocketing up as he unleashed his fury!

Unfortunately its what we listeners are stuck with for now... or is it?

I blame Scott Zolack, after he sent them food it became envouge to do so.

AGREED....this could be a very good show. Talk FOOTBALL guys Patriots football.

Check your food requests and stupid jokes and life's opinion at the door and please, talk football.

Andy Hart is good, Perillo is great, I think the world of Fred and I have said it before if Casale sticks to FOOTBALL, he knows his stuff.

Tom Casale is a total d-bag. Ben Watson is involved in all kinds of community service, what has Tom Casale done for the world lately? Did Tom think that maybe his girlfriend didn't deserve more than a 17.4% tip? Man this guy is a d-bag.

At least I'm not the only one who thinks so:

http://pfwfan.tripod.com/

Now that's just odd, but funny.

Since I was the guy who sent the emails that got them so upset, I thought I'd weigh in on this topic. ;)

First on PFW. If I didn't live in the NE area and was a fan, I'd subscribe. They have a lot of articles, some good some bad, but its all Patriots, and if you don't have any local coverage its better than nothing.

On the other hand, if you have access to the internet, you can always get the stories they publish in the Globe, Herald, and Providence Journal.

As to Cassale, he is nothing but a bully in all its worst term. He subscribes to the "if I yell louder than the other guy, I win the arguement". I was called a "douch bag", an "idiot", and a "moron" on the show, yet what really pissed me off was the way they mocked people who populate message boards. like this one.

These guys have to be blithering idiots to demean the very same people who they SHOULD be trying to get to visit their show. Who do they think goes to that web site, buys their news papers, and supports this team ???

I can take the personal shots, even though I went out of my way not to use harsh language in my criticism of him. Over the week end I'm going to send another email, I don't think they going to like this one either. ;)

I'm another who subscribed and allowed it to lapse without renewing as Casale's nasty demeanor made being a Patriots' fan a negative experience. His worship of Ron Borges and hatred of Mike Reiss while posting here under four different user names did little to endear him or PFW to me. I very rarely read the articles on Patriots.com due to the Casale influence. I can find better quality writing and analysis here or at Patriots' Planet. Reiss, Breer, Pires, Thomase, Curran, and the message boards is almost enough Patriots' news for anyone, with nary a Borges' lickspittle in sight.

Been a subscriber longer than I've been a member of Patsfan.com. Still subscribe, although everything is pretty well gone over by the time I get my copy. (Delivery time has improved in recent months, however.) Being 64, not having Tivo, and all the way to the L, I do find the post-game breakdowns occassionally useful later, as well as the fairly comprehensive stats. I was able to analyze the ST penalties , KR, and PR stats for 2005 by looking back in my stash of old copies. Information it would be hard to find elsewhere. So, I guess I would say subscribing to it is better than not.

i tried getting it in manhattan for a season and it always seemed to get here a couple of weeks later than i would have liked. as for the articles, they are not as "homer" as I expected. i didn't renew the subscription because of the late delivery in new york.

Ken - could you possible update me as to how you are treated by them, after you send your email. I am very interested in hearing.

I share your viewpoint that the Patriot fanatic (that's me) should be their target demographic. If we don't listen, who the hell will??

Feel free to PM me if you do not care to post at any time.
