Another great win and another great game from Tommy. I don't know if this was mentioned in any thread but my heart missed a beat when Tommy got hit hard below the knees in the third quarter I think. On tv it looked bad, and why no flags thrown on that ? Are they allowed to hit the QB below the knees ? Man i was worried for a minute. Got to tip your hats to the Coaches because I thought we played a great game. Cheers. Abdul

Scary moment, no doubt.

For Brady too, I think--anyone else notice his only period of shakiness yesterday (apart from the missed throw in the endzone) was the few plays after that?

Re: My heart stopped !

yah, i screamed...like a girl

Re: My heart stopped !

I can't believe that didn't re-tear his ACL. To me that looked worse than the Bernie Pollard hit.

If we have any medical professionals on here, is a knee that has been surgically ACL repaired BETTER able to withstand such a hit due to more stringent and targeted rehab exercises?

It was similar to when Pollard took out his knee, both intended to injure. With all the safety rules nowadays, I don't know why they allow defenders dive at QB's knees. Somebody's career will end by one of these cheap shots.

They don't. The refs missed the call.

Re: My heart stopped !

The league said there was nothing illegal about the Pollard hit.

At the time Pollard hit Brady in Sept. 2008, it wasn't.

I wasn't talking about the legality of the Pollard hit. THIS hit should have been flagged.

And that the KNEE looked hit worse than on the Pollard hit.

The Brady rule deals with lunging at the knees from a player already on the ground.

The rule was actually in place the prior season after Carson Palmer got hurt in the playoffs. It was there a whole year and a half before Brady was injured.

Re: My heart stopped !

...having the knee braces on helped ... that being said, i think i lost 1 full year of my life watching that hit

Re: My heart stopped !

Man I dropped my chicken wing when this happened.

Me and all of the other Pats fans in the bar just looked at each other until he got up. You could see us all let out the sigh of relief afterwards.

Re: My heart stopped !

Here's an article on the 'brady rule': NFL official helps Patriots tackle the new ?Brady Rule? - Boston.com

According to the article it's the 'lunge' at the knee that is penalized, not mere swiping at. Luckily for Brady, on that play, his leg was lifted off the ground. If it had remained planted, I think he would have been seriously injured. I think the league needs to look at this play closely and dole out fines if necessary. We can't be having star QBs knocked out for the season. I mean look at how miserable Indiania is without Peyton. Now imagine another 2-3 star QBs get knocked out, the league as a whole loses a lot of star power and ability to attract audiences.

Oh but that hit on Rivers, how in the WORLD was it a penalty? I didn't see any 'driving to the ground', that's how a clean tackle is supposed to be made!

I thougth it happened at least twice, the worst of which is the one you are talking about.

I thought that wasn't legal to try to tackle a QB from below the knees by twisting their shins around in a pretzel.

Re: My heart stopped !

There is a rule about tackling at a players knee and as I said the Brady rule deals with lunging. Maybe I didn't word my original post well but even if it's a 15 yard penalty, so what, that won't stop someone from doing it. If Goodell really wants to clean up the game than he should fine the SD lineman a good amount. My bet is no fine on this, while other good hits will be fined.

Re: My heart stopped !

It also didn't help that CBS was so slow to get back to the field, especially with Nantz saying 2 times "Brady got hit in the knee" (or something along those lines)...

Re: My heart stopped !

This is from wiki on the 2005-2006 season:

During the off-season, the league's Rules Committee modified the rule regarding low hits on quarterbacks. The new rule prohibited defenders from hitting a passer at or below the knee unless they are blocked into him. Injuries to Palmer, Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger, and Tampa Bay's Brian Griese were cited as reasons for the new rule. The rule now requires that defenders take every opportunity to avoid hitting a quarterback at or below the knees when the quarterback is in a defenseless position looking to throw with both feet on the ground.

That was a crazy call, it looked textbook perfect. They said he was slammed to the ground, but it was a tackle. What else is he suppose to do? Pick him up and do a firemens carry?

Not a doc, so can't answer that.......

However, I can theorize that because his back (right) leg was off the turf, it most likely allowed the left knee to collapse with an inward rotation, which is something knees are designed to do. Had the back foot been planted, that inward rotation would have been resisted at the hip level and the knee would have not have flexed the way it did.

If you dare (and I admit, it's hard to do), watch the play again, you clearly can see that his hip collapses inward with the knee as it twists. That allows his body (hip) to rotate with the turning knee (as it twists inward) in a typical "natural" turning motion. Had it been planted, it could not have done that.

On the 2008 Brady injury, both feet were on turf.

That's the only thing I can come up with that allowed him to escape what looked like a hideous injury on that play yesterday,
