Im stuck at work at my desk and cant log into certain sites. But have seen some tweets from people listening to the radio saying something about Steve Smith from the Panthers in talks with the Pats?

Tell me this is a joke? Thanks.

Tony Mazz said last week that he heard rumors that it might happen, but that is all I have heard.

Why would we want to do this though? Is "his" veteran experience needed here? He still seems to be a solid reciever with a poor poor offense around him in Carolina.

He would contribute, but wouldnt he also be a problem?

Rumors are just that, rumors. Until it happens, who knows. But you're question could of been asked of a few players BB has traded for in the past.

I recall rumors about Smith to the Pats about two weeks ago, but to me it doesn't make sense for either side. Carolina's defense is okay; their problem is their offense, so trading Smith - the face of their franchise - only makes them worse.

As for the Pats, with the addition of Branch, and emergence of Hernandez, Gronkowski and Tate, as good as Smith is I don't see why they would be looking for a WR. Trading for Branch made sense because he's already familiar with the system and can therefore contribute immediately; the same cannot be said for Smith or any other receiver.

The area of need for the Pats is on defense. The area of need for Carolina is offense. This trade rumor doesn't make sense to me for either side.

There is nothing on twitter about a "Steve Smith Patriots" trade since the 11th. Bunk.

I'm hearing this too. Smith will be moved. Tough to say where, though. What's he like from a character perspective?

I agree with this, why would the pats trade for Smith now after obtaining Branch. A couple of weeks ago it would but not any longer.

He beat the hell out of one of his teammates last year. And, was suspended by the Panthers for it.

Why in God's name would NE ever do this? The guy is injured and he is arguably the worst locker room influence in the entire league. Why would Moss be gone if they were just going to bring this dude in?

Not only will I pass, but I think this rumor has no legs.

With WW's contract negotiations started, can we afford Steve Smith ? How long and how much is his current contract ?

I feel this is something to do with yesterday's rumor about Pats in for another WR / shipping Mankins out. This would not be connecting the dots, it is like dropping in a bunch of dots

If the Pats can get him for a good deal, he could be a low risk high reward type of player. I am not extremely high on the deal, but he still got a 1,000 yards and 7 TDs with their horrible offense last year.

Why would the Pats want him?

In strictly football terms, he'd fit into the more horizontal passing attack we seem to want to return to, and yet still pose a huge big-play threat. Imagine a Wes Welker, only every time he catches the ball in space, there's a possibility he could take it all the way.

Moss required a double-team down the field. Smith needs to be doubled from the 5 yard line on. With Smith and Welker occupying two underneath defenders each, the Pats could use Hernandez and Gronk's height down the seem, and Tate, in a 3 WR set, would likely be left alone at the line, and single covered downfield.

In terms of the baggage that comes with him, my guess would be that by now, BB has learned that you get one great honeymoon year with a guy like Smith, but you don't want to make him part of your long-term plans.

Apparently you aren't aware that he got into not one, but two physical altercations with teammates. In one case, he ended the guys career and broke multiple bones in his face.

Yeah, I want him hanging around with these young receivers.

A mid round pick or so would be all I would give for Smith. I'd much rather pay a higher price and try to grab Lee Evans. The Bills need draft picks and we have draft picks to spend.

Apparently you are either full of Sh*t or you don't know what really happened regarding the situation as A) nobodies careers were ended and B) despite all of this he was voted a team captain this season http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/09/09/1677405/smith-regains-team-captain-status.html. There are way worse locker room characters than Steve Smith and you and I both no that. Im not a fan of the idea but that doesn't mean Im going to go out spouting off BS to show my displeasure in the idea.
