Kirwin thought on the Patriots draft process

Talk about it.

"As Gil Brandt said, there's little difference in the player graded at No. 20 and the guy at No. 45."

I would expand that out a little this year. Or say there little difference between 50 and 125.

Ugh this brings up bad memories of **** Steinberg. Steinberg must have had some magic dust he used to throw in owners's eyes (reporters too) so they would worship him in spite of one bad draft after another. Ick; a disaster for the Patriots.

I think that was an interesting glimpse into the general draft process of this organization. I think it also explains why you seldom hear about preferences unless it's a smoke screen or it's coming from someone familiar with a scout who may know what they are looking for or whom they are looking at in general, but is almost as clueless as we are as to what HE will ultimately decide to do. Scouts and coaches may have opinions and he may value them but they don't have a say. Pioli reportedly did, but he's gone now. Dimetroff and Josh and Ratgini may be looking for players within similar parameters, but they don't have his 30 years of experience in assessing and identifying what potentially works best and why. And as much as they have gleaned from him they each have their own personal preferences and varying needs depending on the situation they find themselves in. Ratgini likely has next to no input in Cleveland at this juncture. Dimetroff isn't working with branches of the coaching tree. Josh doesn't have Tom Brady fronting his offense or someone with experience in this system coordinating his defense or manning his personnel department.

Steinberg would sometimes fall into the same trap into which Booby Grier would fall head-over-heels some years later: athleticism uber alles, intangibles (football IQ, self-motivation, discipline, etc.) be damned.

Steinberg basically gravy-trained the good drafts of Ron Meyer into a GM's position, and thus began the decline of the Pats until they were rescued by Parcells & Charlie Armey.

Jest fans are so fun, loved the comment.
