Seymour to Report on Saturday...Ready for Monday's game????

Re: Seymour to Report on Saturday.. Ready for Monday's game????

I reserve the right to change my mind if Belichick has a replacement in the pipeline. I certainly hope that is the case. But right now, September 12, 2009, 4:33 P.M. in the east, I don't like the trade.

That's what makes the NFL sesason so fascinating. Nobody knows and nothing is a slam dunk.

I like the trade, but it could definitely be a negative when all is said and done.

Thank goodness there is a salary cap in the NFL and the best brains tend to win, versus the competitive catastrophe that is Major League Baseball.

You got that right. What a mess that is.

Re: Seymour to Report on Saturday.. Ready for Monday's game????

Wolfpack;1498956 Bill Belichick is a human being and said:
I believe that if we had Deion Branch in Indianapolis in January of 2007, then there would be 4 Lombardis in the trophy case instead of 3.[/B]

I don't like the argument that "Belichick knows more about football than you do so he's right and you're wrong." Yes he knows more about football than any of us and yes, he knows more about this specific situation than any of us, but that pretty much describes every single coach and GM in the NFL. Are they all above criticism?

I believe that too, HOWEVER that would have been our last under Belichick & Kraft because the precedent would be well enshrined that violating your contract the year before it's up will get you the big money and our carefull cap management with resultant depth would be down the tubes. Where BB failed that year was in not finding an adequate substitute to The Twig. That's one reason among several that we lost to the Colts.

I venture that BB regrets having accomodated Seymour in his holdout. You could infer that The Twig saw that and took it as his right and due.

There were several plays this preseason where the play went towards the sideline and Seymour simply stood there and watched. I remarked to one of them in the game thread. I couldn't believe what I saw ... Seymour not pursuing to the sideline???

Also ... he looked slow ... real slow. Perhaps he was behind the other guys shapewise but even if not in shape a player can show intensity ... I saw neither.

Several members here were claiming Seymour was a beast in camp ... I don't doubt them for a minute but what I read here in the camp threads was not what I saw this preseason. Just saying it didn't look good even to this casual fan who is far from an expert on these matters.

I have been to a few training camp sessions and he did not stand out. But then again, no experienced vet stands out in training camp or preseason..

They also got something for Deion Branch, but I'd rather have the 4th Lombardi Trophy instead.

To have had Deion Branch we would have had to give in to his holdout, overpay him, and lose some of the players that got us in the position you think he would have Messiahed us from.
Cant have it both ways. I would agree that you take any team in the NFL and add some number of players and they would have won the SB. The problem is their is a salary cap so you must deduct players as well.
Your argument is like saying Earthwind Moreland would have held on to the ball Samuel dropped on the last drive of sb 42, so if we kept him instead of Samuel, we'd have another Lombardi.

Re: Seymour to Report on Saturday.. Ready for Monday's game????

Unless Seymour was standing up during meetings and peeing on coaches, or something to that effect, I don't know what possibilities you could possibly be talking about. Is it your insinuation that Seymour talking about his contract status would have undermined BB's authority and ruined the team chemistry? Was Seymour such a huge presence that this was a real possibility?

Unless there was 'something' that made keeping Seymour completely impossible, and that 'something' came up in the few days leading up to the trade talks and agreement, no, I don't believe any such thing. If the situation was so untenable, it would have been dealt with a lot earlier than it was.

My opinion is that a player adds or detracts more to or from a team that what he does on the field.
It would appear that you do not.
That is fine, I was just trying to understand how you reconcile that BB typically makes the right decisions, and I can't speak for you, but from my perspective I agree with the criteria he bases his decisions on. When it happens that a decision seems to conflict with what I percieve those criteria to be, I try to be open minded and assume that there are facts I do not know rather than assume that a completely out of character decision was made.
I don't profess to have a clue what those factors are, but if it were a malingering, whining player, then I would support getting rid of him even if the player in his place is less talented.
I perceive you would not agree with that, or even factor that attitude into the decision.
Thats fine, your position is still one I do not understand, and I wanted to try to understand it, but perhaps I never will.

Re: Seymour to Report on Saturday.. Ready for Monday's game????

Sorry, Pao - - the glass is half-full AND half-empty for you.

You rejoice that it makes the Pats weaker this year (yeah, but who got stronger from the trade this year????? - - the same team you claim gets weaker in 2011!!!).

So, let's rephrase it for you:

This hurts the Chargers, since the Raiders get stronger in 2009 and the Patriots get stronger in 2011.
As I have said in other posts- the Raiders (a division rival) with Seymour are NOT a threat to the Chargers this year AND will be weaker from '11 on because they gave up their 1st that year (one that many of you here are predicting will be a top 5 pick). The Patriots, a team that the Chargers will probably have to reckon with in the playoffs, is weaker without Seymour. Looks to me like the cup is full for the Chargers as it relates to this trade in '09 and beyond. The ONLY negative is the Patriots in '11 get a first round pick, probably a high one. Oh well, good for the Patriots. Still, I like the trade from a Chargers pov for '09 and beyond.

Re: Seymour to Report on Saturday.. Ready for Monday's game????

Don't be ridiculous. According to some people, the Patriots just lost one of the best d-lineman in football, but it won't weaken them one bit. :D

Now I know what it means to be "drinking the kool-aid." :D
Not sure I understand. Are you saying that the Patriots just lost one of the best d-lineman in football, but it won't weaken them one bit or are you saying some people are saying it but you don't agree. Because whoever said it was wrong, imo. If you give up one of the best d-linemen in football your team, logically, must be weaker than it was with him. If that's drinking Kool-aid, then the Kool-aid drinkers are right on this one.

Re: Seymour to Report on Saturday.. Ready for Monday's game????

My point, which I have already stated twice and will now do so for a third time, is that they are not as strong or as deep today as they were 7 days ago. The margin of error just got a lot smaller.
Exactly right. If you lose an all-pro player from your roster and you don't replace him with an all-pro player from outside, then your team is weaker. And the Patriots margin for error, on defense if nothing else, just became smaller for '09

Re: Seymour to Report on Saturday.. Ready for Monday's game????

Football is a game of attrition, over the course of the season. Everyone suffers injuries, and it takes luck to even remain in contention, since every team has at least a couple players that it flat-out can't afford to lose. Why didn't the Pats win in 2007? Because Colvin and Neal were hurt, simple as that. If Polamalu's significantly slowed down for the remainder of this year, then the Steelers go from SB favorites to underdog contenders, at best.

So to pretend that margin of error doesn't matter is, at best, incredibly shortsighted. The team that wins the SB is one of two things (and usually both): 1- incredibly lucky, and 2- strong on depth. Every team is going to finish the season much weaker than it started it, and the team that wins will win because it was able to manage its injuries. When your margin of error goes down, this becomes harder to do. Talk about the 2001 team all you want, but if the only way to win the SB is to have near-miraculous luck as far as injuries go (like that team did), then your team is going to almost always come up short.
Post of the month. Excellent.

Amen to that, brother!

Nothing new there. I'm glad he didn't trash the Pats on the way out the door, though.

Go get 'em, Big Sey. Looking forward to rooting for you on the Raiders this year, and against the Raiders after you leave in 2010!

He will leave the trashing for Ron to handle. This was remedial spin 101 after almost a week of watching his reputation and career absorb a nut punch. I wish him well. But my loyalty is to the guy who drafted him when most fans and pundits said that was nuts and then put him in a position to win 3 rings. I wish he could have checked that ego at the door. I know he seldom flaunted it, but sometimes those guys (Law) are easier to handle. With Richard it always simmered just below the surface. The Krafts tried to enlighten him to what it could mean financially long term to become an icon who retires here. He kept equating respect with $$$. They all make choices. At the end of the day Belichick wants the ones who want to be here, who want to win and win more, who get what the system enables them to do and embrace it. The ones who chafe over the system vs. talent crap just aren't a good long term fit.

Exactly:

1. Borges hates the Pats.
2. Borges doesn't care about getting the facts right.
3. Borges and Seymour are buddies.
4. Seymour is bitter, and has absorbed a "nut punch" (great phrase) to his reputation by appearing (gasp!) to be spoiled brat.
5. Seymour wants someone to tell his side and do his bashing for him.

QED.

Good luck to Richard ... he'll be happy when he cashes in ... Belichick actually did him a favor as his stats will be greater than they were here.

I watched the press conference and it was something else. Al putting the screws to the media and Big Sey shedding some tears, or maybe he has an eye infection. Very entertaining.
