New York went into the playoffs last year with a better 1-2 punch in the rotation (2006 Mussina > 2007 Pettitte), and an offense that was just as good. Good pitching will beat good hitting just like it did with NYY last year, and you can't get much better than Carmona and Sabathia.

The two offenses are comparable, but if the two were to meet the Red Sox pitching would be a huge advantage over the Phillies pitching.

If the Rockies win tomorrow nights playoff game. Colorado wins the NL and goes to the World Series.

The Phillies won't be there, but the Sox most likely will. Not because we are better right now than the Yankees, but because the Yanks can't beat Clevland and we will beat the Angels and Clevland.

Yeah but the Yankees might not get past Cleveland. I'm a Yankees fan, and I'm saying that. Cleveland's 1, 2 pitching punch is tough. The Yanks don't hit lefties well, and could face Sabathia twice if it goes the distance. Yikes!

BTW, the Phillies are an awesome story. Hope they do well in the playoffs. They've been decimated by injuries, were crucified in their press, and left for dead a long time ago. Good luck Phillies!

Pitching wins in the playoffs. Slugging your way through tends to not work so well against the top pitchers. Recent Yankees teams are an example of this (and it's the reason why I don't think the current Yankees team will win it).
Very true. That's why I'm not as high on the Yanks as some people are. The difference this year for the Yanks is that they are better in the rotation than in years past. They can at least compete there with Wang, Pettitte, and hopefully Clemens.

I'll take this years Yankees 1-2 punch over last years.

Yes, good pitching is more important than good hitting in the playoffs.

The Cardinals lastyear won the World Series, and they only won 83 games if correct.

which is why I had no respect for them last year. they were a bad team that would not have won any other division which got hot at the right time and benefited from Detroit shooting themselves in the foot.

They were maybe the 15th best team in baseball. They were just extremely lucky to make the tournament which should be reserved for the top 8 teams.

besides, it was unlikely. yes it happened last year. that doesn't make it likely to happen again. it's especially unlikely to choose which of the crappy NL teams will win.

Are they better in the rotation?

Don't forget that 2006 Mussina was really good and much better than 2007 Pettite. 2007 Clemens might be better than 2006 Johnson, but is hurt and league-average anyway. Hughes (or even Mussina) is better than 2006 Jaret Wright, but neither is spectacular. Improvements at #3 and #4 are offset by the big downgrade at #2.

Oh, and 2007 Wang is worse than 2006 Wang because he'll be pitching game 1 on the road, where he is mediocre. That clinches things for me, I'd rather have last year's Yankees staff (with Wang at home) over this year's.

And in response to your recent post, last year's 1-2 was much better. I think you forget the year Mussina had last year because he's been so bad this year.
