Default Darius Butler with #23?

Nope, I'm not making it up. Reiss wrote it so don't just junk it.

Five nuggets from talking to NFL scouts and personnel executives leading up to the draft: 1. That Baylor left tackle Jason Smith is in the discussion for the top pick is surprising to one scouting director, who doesn't rate him a top-10 talent; 2. Best player in the draft whom the Chiefs might be fortunate to see drop to them at No. 3: Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry; 3. The Lions have made calls about trading the No. 1 pick, but interest is predictably light because of the cost to sign the player; 4. Bill Belichick's presence at the University of Connecticut Pro Day last week was duly noted in one NFL office, and that club wouldn't be surprised if cornerback Darius Butler is strongly considered with New England's 23d pick; 5. Boston College defensive lineman B.J. Raji was inching toward top-five status before reports of his positive drug test at the combine. Now he might slip out of the first round.

I won't just junk, but I'm skeptical that we would go CB in the 1st round, much as I like Butler. I think there were plenty of prospects at Connecticut's pro day to warrant a visit from BB. Didn't he attend Brown's pro day in 2007, prompting rumors that we were sure to take Zak DeOssie? I see William Beatty or even Donald Brown as being more likely picks for the Pats right now. Not that Butler isn't a great prospect.

The idea of Raji slipping out of the first round boggles my mind. God, I hope he slips to 23. Raji and Barwin would be too good to possibly happen.

Well, we know that he was intrigued by something/someone he saw at UConn's Pro Day. But that's about all we know for sure. [Maybe he saw some new positional drills he can incorporate into Patriots practices or something.]

At 23? I sure hope not. That would be disappointing to me if they took a corner that early. We just drafted 2 cbs last season that aren't even fully developed and we brought in Bodden and Springs. Again, I would be disappointed if that happens with 23. I wouldn't mind so much at 34 though.

They might go Butler #23 and Raji at #34... who knows ? To be honest, I am not sure how much a positive test affects draft position. Calvin Johnson had a positive... don't see anyone saying he wasn'T worth it (though it was the 59th WR the Lions tried, so I guess they had to be right once !).

Raji at 23 would be awesome. In a heartbeat I would trade up to 17 to get him even after everything that has gone down with him.

Raji at 23 and Barwin at 34 (or trade up to 26 using #89 and #34 if necessary) would be the best Pats draft ever. Two top 10 talents on defense at reasonable money. Get a safety and go BPA or trade the other pick into 2010.

The problem with Raji is that its come out that, not only did he test positive at the combine, but he also tested positive while playing for BC. I'm not sure the Patriots would tolerate that..

Faulk that!

Seriously, if he becomes a realistic suspension risk, you've got to be nervous.
