Surprised nobody mentions that Dante is approaching his 70s
That's because he's approaching his 70s in the same way that Ryan Mallett is approaching his 30s.
[For the record: Scarnecchia is 64, Mallett is 24.]

I don't see Saban leaving Alabama for several years, if ever. He's got a great gig down there, and Alabama has rewarded him handsomely, and the alumni & fans adore him and his program. Alabama under Saban is like New England under Bellichick, and I just don't see how Saban could think anything could be better for him and his family.

The Patriots ahve announced that former Patriots coach and OC at several other teams will be joining the Patriots staff.
Why now?
First his HC and therefor the staff were fired too. The Patriots may have simply chosen to hire him before he signed on with another staff. Others have theorized that Bill Belichick intends to step down in a year or three, and intends McDaniels to be his replacement. Daboll was his OC under McDaniel, so he is comfortable with him, and would make an easy transition to OC under McDaniels. I guess that is possible, although I don't think Belichick will retire before health forces him to do so as he just loves coaching.
When he does, I think he will recomend to Kraft to hire a football executive who has run and built an entire football enterprise, coaching, scouting, admin, CAP management, talent evaluation, just like BB has done. I would think Nick Saban or Nick Ferentz would be his recomendation. Both have NFL experience, Nick like Bill failed as a HC. Both have resurrected college programs, from scratch. Under the CAP, NFL teams are now more and more resembling College teams getting and integrating new players as others graduate and move on.
As for Daboll, I offer another possibility. Everyone overlooks that Daboll was also a QB coach with BB and worked with McDaniel befor. While the Patriots were trying to improve the $100 million dollar QB, and also tutor and refine the the skinny kid from Michigan a decade ago.
Perhaps they need a single specialist dedicated to refining and tutoring a new youngster from Michgan and Arkansas.

First comment this should be merged into the existing Daboll thread where all the possibilities for bringing him back have been discussed.
Second comment, almost none of your facts are correct. Daboll was not going to be in demand after failing at multiple stops. He was never a QB's coach here, he left because Bill wouldn't give him the job after passing over him and giving Josh the nod at OC in training. Daboll never worked for McDaniels let alone Bill as an OC. He was a WR position coach here. He worked for Mangidiot and Sparano and RAC...and failed as an OC. Saban is several months OLDER than BB. He's not going to replace him nor with his ego do I believe he'd want to. Ferentz has no NFL experience beyond his stint in Cleveland with Bill many years go as an OL coach. His son Brian left NE to coach with him. Another son is a Jr. playing for him. There remains one still in HS. He makes almost $4M per and is signed through 2020. He's had many opportunities to leave Iowa including to HC for Pioli twice and he seems disinclined to.
Saban said, within the last week, that he has no intention of returning to the NFL. Ever.
Daboll was re-hired, in my honest opinion, because of his ability to develop WRs. Daboll was the WR coach who helped Troy Brown and David Patten develop their rapport with Brady and then also who helped Deion Branch and David Givens. Daboll also seems to be better at talent evaluation of WRs than McDaniels. It was Daboll who said that Chad Jackson wouldn't be coachable and wouldn't work in New England despite the glowing endorsement Jackson got from McDaniels..
The Pats have failed to draft a WR who has been capable of developing into a productive receiver since Givens, though Edelman seems close..

I suggested this possibility in a couple of threads. If true (not a given) it doesn't bode all that well for re-signing Welker although of course we could still draft a WR or two even if we re-sign him.
With Brady's mentor having passed, I could see Daboll's roll in a similar capacity only as one sanctioned by the team.
At this point I really doubt anyone has anything to teach Tom Brady about mechanics
He does get checked out by that baseball guy in the offseason, but being Tom Brady's QB coach is gotta be the cushiest job ever.

The Patriots have been overachievers the past two years. It doesn't have the talent to compensate for injuries, and it wins so much because it puts in 99% effort in the regular season and plays with terrific schemes to mask its deficiencies.
But in the playoffs a good team at 99% will not beat emotional, talented teams that play at 100%. It's what happened against the Giants in 2011 and the Ravens in 2012.

Sorry Mo. Can't agree with the claim that Daboll failed as an OC. No one would have succeeded as an OC in Cleveland with the garbage that was there. In Miami, they actually improved under Daboll's tutelage. It wasn't Daboll's fault that Sparano was a horrible HC and that Miami brought in garbage players.. As for in KC, not sure how you can blame Daboll there. They lost their starting center 3 games in and didn't have an adequate back-up. That has to fall on Pioli, RAC and their O-Line Coach. They also lost their primary back-up TE (Kevin Boss) after 2 games, though they still had enough offensive weapons that they should have done better than they did, but Lilja, Hochstein and Allen proved not to be up to the task of holding up the interior of that line.. And that hurt them big time.
Where I will hold Daboll accountable as an OC is the fact that Cassell clearly regressed. Possibly because of the injuries. Possibly because of getting sacked so many times (41 times in his last 18 games). But possibly from Daboll being his 3rd OC in 4 years..

How can you say it doesn't bode all that well for Welker considering that only Lloyd is under contract beyond this season? Identifying WRs and developing them means they are (more than likely) 2 years away from being fully productive. Meaning that getting others in here that can get on track with Brady is a necessity this off-season, yet again. Even if Edelman and Welker are re-signed, by 2015, Lloyd and Welker will be at 34 and the Pats will be needing youth in the WR corps.. Guys who can take the load off Lloyd and Welker.
