Didn't quite type that right, but I agree, it is fair to criticize the Niners.

At least he completed 70 passes in the NFL for 1 TD and 7 interceptions!

Carmazzi is a decent guy who, in interviews, pretty much says that he knows he didn't have it either on the field or mentally to play in the NFL. He didn't force anybody to draft him where he was drafted. What was he supposed to do, say, "Um, excuse me, but I think you should draft Tom Brady instead of me?"
What's the point of rubbing it in?
Why not a thread like this on the track record of the GM's and Owners who took everybody and his sister before they took Tom Brady. You might include Belichick and the Krafts in there, because they let Brady drop through five rounds and, according to Belichick, were still "wondering" about him when they (finally) took him in the sixth.

Like CT said,it was not a knock on Carmazzi,it was a knock on the 49ers organization for failure to give the kid down the road from San Mateo a chance to be like his hero Joe Montana and play for the team he and his family loved as a child....The same QB he is being compared to now.
I am sure Carmazzi tried to be a pro QB but he was way below the talent level of even a journeyman,if I want to pick on a QB from the past,it would be a high profile guy like Ryan Leaf who wasn't even good enough to carry Peyton Manning's bags to the airport terminal.
I did think that year that Tim Rattay was going to be a good QB for them...he only ended up as a backup most of his career.

Lets see how the two compare in careers....
TOM BRADY
3,716 PASS COMPLETIONS
43,812 PASSING YARDS
329 PASSING TOUCHDOWNS
CAREER PASSER RATING - 97
2 TIME SUPER BOWL MVP
3 TIME SUPER BOWL CHAMPION QB
7 TIME PRO BOWLER
3 TIME AFC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
5 TIME AFC CHAMPION QB
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GIOVANNI CARMAZZI
0 COMPLETIONS
0 PASSING YARDS
0 PASSING TOUCHDOWNS
CAREER PASSER RATING - 0
NEVER PLAYED IN A SUPER BOWL
NOT EVER ON A PRO BOWL BALLOT
NEVER WON AN NFC CHAMPIONSHIP
....
Actually to sum it all up,he never played in an NFL game
There were many teams who gave up on Tom Brady in the 2000 draft, but no team will ever regret it more than the 49ers who had their chance to draft their season ticket holder for many years.
IMO This was the biggest draft mistake in the history of the NFL
49ers fans will watch this weekend wondering what would have been if one of their biggest fans as a child was ever brought home to be their starting QB
I remember Steve Mariucci saying in "The Brady Six" that had he drafted Brady, he would have most likely still be coaching the Niners today.
Re: Tom Brady vs. Giovanni Carmazzi career stats :)
To be fair, nobody had a 3rd round rating on Brady IIRC. The Niners needed a QB pretty high in the draft, and that is where Carmazzi rated out on most boards I think.
Some did question the Carmazzi pick, including me, but that wasn't even the worst QB pick the niners had back then. The worst IMO was when they chose Jim Druckenmiller over Jake Plummer. Plummer would have done very well in the Niner's system IMO.

Given the visual impact of your post's focus on Carmazzi (come on, man, you lined up Giovanni Carmazzi's "career stats" against those--bolded yet--of a possible GOAT's!?!), that's not how what you wrote came across to me; but, I'll take your word about what you intended. If I were making the point you say you were making, I'd have focused on Brady and mentioned Carmazzi almost as an afterthought in a concluding sentence and wouldn't have arrayed the statistics that are, no doubt, a source of embarrassment to him in this context.
No big deal, but I have this "thing" about jumping on people when they are down, especially when they have never pretended to be better than they were and have been viewed as "down" for some time.

Thanks. Good perspective. That's where the emphasis belongs.
BTW. We had some terrific opposition posters out here from Houston last week. Looks like you're off to a good start as well, and I look forward to your contributions as the week goes on and, of course, to your humble acknowledgment that you lost to a better team sometime late on Sunday night .
This is a Board that has traditionally welcomed oppo posters who are knowledgeable and polite and that hits the "ban" button pretty quickly on those who just want to talk nonsense.
Welcome to the Board!
