It seems that way (regarding Moore). Stallworth would be a mild surprise.

Honestly, I see Gaffney going before Stallworth. Dante had some nice catches in the last half of the TB game, and Jabar has been nowhere to be found.

I know that we have differing thoughts to some extent on Moore, QB12, but what we can probably agree on is that he's a backup player for the most part who hopefully won't see much action unless injuries occur.

One thing I would disagree with though is your assessment that he "has played himself squarely on the bubble."

By many posters accts here, he had a very fine game #1. I'll give you that he did not look as good as hoped in game #2, and saw limited time in game #3.

I respect your different opinion on a specific player, I think that will happen all the time, but what I would question is whether we even have enough of a negative sample size to judge that "he's played himself squarely on the bubble."

And if you did choose to cut him by this assessment, who would your chosen player be to replace him? Dennard? He saw his first action yesterday, has been hurt and is a rookie. That isn't going to happen as a replacement.

Cole? He may very well make the team, but even if he did replace Moore--they would simply flip flop positions from CB4 and CB5. Plus I think that a guy like Moore's versatility has made him pretty close to a lock the whole time, although I realize some would disagree. I really think it's between someone like Cole and Dennard, with Cole having the upper hand right now.

Allen? He surely didn't look good at all, and wouldn't offer much/if any of an upgrade.

To sum it up, I think that you may be correct in stating that Moore's game #2 was not good, but I don't think we have enough to go on + a real lack of potential replacements for a bottom roster backup CB at this point. In other words, I don't know if I'd agree that he's played himself that far on the bubble, even if he didn't do as well as we'd have liked.

Only time will sort this one out. You could be right though.

Vets who might be cut in time for them to latch on with another team:
  • White
  • Allen, but I still see him as a candidate to make the roster with all the safety injuries (yet again).
  • Stallworth (or, I guess, Gaffney)
  • Shiancoe

I think that is a great point as Belichick often shows enough respect for a guy in that situation to allow them another crack somewhere else.

From what the initial reports are regarding the safeties, it doesn't appear to be too bad, although we'll never know the real truth to the ins/outs of the whole picture either. In a worst case scenario, I think we get at least one of the two back for opening day, because I didn't personally get the feeling that Allen had showed too much this camp, although I could be wrong.

I'm also wondering if the Gaffney feelings aren't a bit misplaced, simply due to his chemistry with Brady + TFB's openness about wanting him again. I just have a hunch that Gaffney's okay here.

Schiancoe's a goner though, that's for sure.

Not impressed whatsoever with Donte' Stallworth this preseason.

Just to play the Devil's Advocate here, IMHO a LOT of the throws to Stallworth were way off the mark, or tipped by defenders. Did he miss a couple of catchable balls? yeah, but so have all our receivers so far. I just can't come out and blame him for the low number of catches he has had to date, as I don't see it as being all on him.

Something to consider: the three players that are still on PUP (Jake Ballard, Myron Pryor, Markus Zusevics) could be moved to Reserve/PUP. They would be off the roster for at least the first six weeks of the season, but that would mean that as few as seven players would need to be waived by Monday rather than ten.

It's not as if the status of any of those three is going to change between now and Friday evening, so why not go ahead and do that now during this round of cuts?

As far as cutting vets now, is there really that much of a difference between releasing them on Monday versus Friday? It seems to me that if that were the train of thought then they would have already been let go, as was the case with Underwood or Koepplin. I'd rather keep some of the veteran players mentioned earlier just in case another player at the same position has an unforeseen injury that may drastically change the appeal of retaining them.

A little off topic, but something I've been wondering at since I heard Belichick state how the worst thing about his job was making these cuts.

So why make them?

What purpose do these cuts serve the owners or the NFLPA? Why 53 man rosters and not 75 or 85?

A few comments/speculation/predictions from the local media (Greg Bedard, Field Yates and Tom E Curran):

Initial roster cuts coming with vets in focus - Extra Points - Boston.com

Quote:
The players who we'll be watching the next 24 hours: center Dan Koppen, receiver Donte' Stallworth and defensive tackle Tim Bulman.

Bill Belichick has great respect for all three, but especially for a 10-year warrior like Koppen. That being said, Koppen has played much better of late. Nick McDonald, whose versatility could have led him to take Koppen's spot, suffered a right arm injury against the Buccaneers and that may put McDonald's spot in jeopardy. And if guard Brian Waters wasn't expected back, Koppen's chances for making the team would greatly increase with Dan Connolly likely moving full-time to right guard.

Other possibilities: Deion Branch, Gerard Warren, Will Allen, Tracy White and Donald Thomas.

Branch, Warren, White and Thomas seem like long shots for the initial cuts. We feel Branch will make the 53.

Predicting cuts to 75-man limit - New England Patriots Blog - espnBoston

Quote:
Predicted cuts
Safety Will Allen
Safety Sergio Brown
Defensive lineman Tim Bulman
Offensive lineman Derek Dennis
Wide receiver Jesse Holley
Defensive end Aaron Lavarias
Defensive back Derrick Martin
Offensive lineman Dustin Waldron

Predicted moves to reserve lists
Tight end Jake Ballard (reserve/PUP)
Offensive lineman Markus Zusevics (reserve/NFI)

Cuts looming, some Patriots who should stay loose

Quote:
Some of the likely suspects for release are the guys who didn't get into Friday night's game at Tampa without clear injury or personnel situation (like Brian Hoyer sitting so Ryan Mallett could get his quarterback reps) keeping them down.

The guys who didn't play who may be in trouble are: CB Will Allen, S Josh Barrett, S Ross Ventrone, DE Aaron Lavarias, OL Jeremiah Warren, OL Matt Kopa, OL Dustin Waldron, OL Derek Dennis and DL Tim Bulman.

Others who could be up against it are wide receivers Jessie Holley and Jeremy Ebert, linebacker Jeff Tarpinian and tight ends Spencer Larsen and Tyler Urban.
