That explains Charles Johnson, at least
It's more off than that. It's who got bonuses and who got paid the previous season then signed a new deal the following spring and who deferred bonus money (as Brady did deferring some of his signing bonus to August of 2011). Why they do these lists from June to June is beyond me, but for football players it really makes the data meaningless as far as who actually makes what due to overlap. They also purely guesstimate endorsements based on other media reports and what they believe they know of markets.
Re: Forbes :World's highest-paid athletes: Brady at 28
The earnings include endorsements. And of course players receiving signing bonusses are misleadingly higher, and those in a contract beyond its first year are misleadingly lower.
