Which is why they'd probably be content to let him remain on the $9 million franchise tag for this year. There's little salary cap savings to be had if Welker wants market value.

Welker is saying all the right things as of now - hopefully he won't hold out for fear of injury and/or to spur negotiations. But if he decides to do so it's tough to blame him. He's looking at a big payday next year if healthy and productive.

That being said, with Garçon being so much younger it's tough to compare the two players - hopefully Wes will opt for security and guaranteed money that's less than what he would receive next year if he can avoid injury.

I'd say the price just jumped significantly for Wallace and other young receivers though - so the Redskins are not helping their league brethren who are not as cavalier about the cap as they are.

Garcon's age is just one of many things that make it tough to compare the two...

And there could be substantial cap savings this season if Welker was signed to a market value deal. If he was signed to the same deal as Garcon his cap hit this year could be as little as $5M - $6M+ depending on structure (which depends on what level of potential dead cap you're willing to deal with in year 5 or year 4, $4-8M or 3-6M agaisnt a $140M or more cap).

Without going through all that again, I'll just point out that Welker reportedly turned down 2 for 16, guaranteed. Given that, why on Earth would he take 3 for 21?

And why should he take so much less per year than Garcon, when he's a much better player?

Seems like Garcon was right about that 5 years at 8 million per.

Mike Shanahan knows what he's doing he bringing in a young Rookie QB he's making sure his Weapons are there. They got a nice kid from Miami last year who got hurt Leonard Hankerson his name i think with Garson - Moss and Gaffney unlike us the Skins are not lacking at WR.

I don't think anything that the Redskins do affect most of the league. Albert Haynesworth didn't have a huge affect on what Vince Wilfork got.

Stupid contracts usually do not have a huge affect on other contracts. Other WR contracts from other teams might have affect, but so will Colston who appears to have taken a hometown discount.

I think the contract Wayne signed with the Colts, will have a bigger impact on Welker that what the Redskins did with Garcon.

Wayne signed for 3 years, but at this time the amounts (guaranteed and total) are unknown...

edit : profootballtalk says 17.5M total, 7.5M guaranteed.

If Mike Shannahan knew what he was doing he wouldn't be coaching in Washington these days...two years in to a 5 year plan he won't be given the time to see through unless he's winning the division by year 4.
