Default Perfection Lost (Warning: Villanelle)

The villanelle is a poetic form known for its utility for obsessive-compulsive subject matter. "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night," by Dylan Thomas, is probably the most famous one in English (conveniently, it mentions a dance in a green bay, so you'll see an homage in the following.)

I figured we're all obsessive-compulsive today, winding the tape back over and over.... but trying to stay aware of the right way to look at it. And so I give you, Perfection Lost.

Perfection Lost

Make no mistake, the Giants won the game.
When no time's left, the better team has won.
New England lost Perfection just the same.

Titanic, to the Super Bowl they came,
but when the ref had fired the final gun,
make no mistake, the Giants won the game.

Make no excuse in Brady's hallowed name.
It rings as hollow as for Tarkenton.
New England lost perfection just the same.

Asante would have could have should have had that lame
fourth-quarter sideline pass - but didn't, son.
Make no mistake, the Giants won the game.

This juggernaut, the Bucs were meant to tame,
then Dallas fell; no Green Bay dance was done.
New England lost Perfection just the same.

No monument, no trophy, if no shame,
to end the year a mere eighteen and one.
Make no mistake, the Giants won the game;
New England lost Perfection, just the same.
