Default Most Disturbing Fact About Recent Pats Playoff Losses - No Pass Rush

What is the one thing that makes playing defense easier? Pressuring the other teams QB. This is one thing the Pats have be completely unable to do.

2007 Super Bowl.
New York Giants 17 vs. New England Patriots 14
Giants get 5 sacks on Brady (-40 yards) while the Pats only get 3 on Manning (-8). While 3 to 5 doesn't seem too bad the 3 sacks for -8 hardly put the Giants in 'long' down and distance situation. Also, if Manning gets sacked on the F-ing Tyree catch the Pats win that S.B.

2009 Playoff
Baltimore Ravens 33 at New England Patriots 14
Baltimore gets 3 sacks of Brady (-22 yards) while the Pats get 0 sacks on Flacco. In fairness Flacco only threw 10 passes but still 3 to 0.

2010 Playoff
New York Jets 28 at New England Patriots 21
Jets get to Brady 5 times (-40) while the Pats get 0 sacks.

So in the last 2 playoff games Pats have been sacked 8 times while getting 0 Sacks.

Until the Pats can get after the QB (and get him to the ground) they will struggle to beat teams in the playoffs

I can't say i was against the trade of Seymore for what we now know will be the 17th pick..

But one has to wonder how the last few seasons would have gone with him.. he clearly is still playing at a high level. And who will be getting for the pick whether its this year's 17th or this years 4th and next years 2??

You play to your advantage. If its not to your advantage to try and reach the QB because you don't think you will be successfull maybe you play a different kind of defense..

For me watching this this game I was more suprised that we couldn't move the ball and score like we had been. I thought our defense had some good moments.

The most disturbing fact is that they no longer are a physically dominant team. In all 3 playoff losses, the opponent owned the trenches, ended the Pats season.

They desperately need to focus this entire next offseason on the trenches.

Yup, toughness in the trenches... but also maybe just too much of New York City. This downswing started with the Giants--the Baltimore game occurred during a Brady recovery year and was fairly understood by all--and hit chapter two with the Jets. In both games we were big favorites and fully expected to win going away---but New York is a tough very smart city and perhaps it produces teams that can rise to the big occasion, at least every once in awhile. Like when it's all on the line against the top dog Pats.

May this New York book, be a short story with a beginning (Giants) and end (Jets) and not turn out to be a novel.

To support your argument.Brady in 03 or 04 suffered 0 sacks in the playoffs.

They need line help on bothsides.

i think the most disturbing thing is the pats offense has only scored 49 points in the last 3 playoff losses, and even in their last playoff win, brady threw 3 ints vs the chargers (also the only game of the past 4 that NE won the rushing battle)

since 2003 the pats have onlly won 2 playoff games where they didn't win the rushing battle (a game vs the steelers, and the 24-21 win at sd where LT ran all over them)

pats had a good run game in 2010, even scored a crapload of rushing tds, but something shuts them down in the playoff losses...must just be the caliber of defense (although they did well vs the jets ...but not enough to win the rushing battle)
