Re: Thoughts on Brandon Meriweather?
I saw enough from Meriweather in the Bengal game to provide confidence that he can be a solid starter and an emotional leader of this defense in the future. Another thing I like about him is that he didn't blown any assignments in the preseason by jumping routes (a la Ellis Hobbs his rookie year) in order to flash playmaking ability and justify his draft status. He's just doing exactly what the team is asking of him, which shows mental maturity, patience and a team first attitude. Rumor has it he has been very quiet in the locker room and kept to himself a bit, but I chalk that up to feeling a bit insecure as a rookie and his intense competitive nature, wanting to contribute more. Meriweather seems like the type of player who is always better in games than in practice, because his great value is his love of violence and fearless attitude. Those qualities can't really be measured in practice, and as a result onlookers and insiders, who criticized him after a nondescript preseason, may have underestimated his talent.
one possible concern about Meriweather is his physical stature. Playing the kind of physical games he does, his build may be a bit slight to hold up over time. If he can be brought along slowly this season, injury free, a full offseason should alleviate those concerns.
